DEFENCE EXPENDITURE

THE COMMISSION OF INQUIRY.

One of the matters that will receivo the attention of Cabinet ,in the near future will be the order of reference for the commission that is to investigate Defence expenditure. Tho order of reference was drafted some time ago, but owing to the absence of Ministers from Wellington and other causes of delay it has not yet received the final approval of Cabinet. The Commission will not be able now to begin its work until after the holidays. Some of the branches of the Defence Department are to bo closed until the end of tho first weelc in January. An effort will bo mado to have the Commission at work before the middle of the month. Tho inquiry is likely to occupy somo weeks.
