BITTER WEATHER

Tho promiso of the Tuesday night sky—for fair weather yesterday—was not fulfilled. Instead, the southerly, getting its second wind, came howling up over the Strait again, with an Antarctic chill in its breath, and bitter rain squalls in its train. The night sky had a hopeless aspect, and the official forecast is correspondingly gloomy. Present indications are for south-east winds, strong to gale, northward of Farewell Spit and Kaikoura, cold, unsettled, and showery weather, with heavy fain in the northern and East Coast districts of the North Island.
