NOTES AND COMMENTS
fBY GUNCOE.I
A final romlnder is given that accentances for tho Merton and Jlawkc'o Bay Suminer uxture6 cloao to-night. Nowadays trainors rarely win three races in a day, but this was tho experience of tho Riccarton mentor R. Longley yes terday, when Donnata, Winter Cherry, and Phil May, all of whom are prepared by him, scored at Timaru. Cynic,.winner of tho Waipa Cup on Sat. urday. is engaged in tho Auckland Cup with the minimum impost. Last year De predation won tho Walpa Cup and afterwards soorod in tho big event at Ellerslie Cynic is an Irish-bred animal, and waa purchased by Sir James Carroll while on a trip to England to carry Mr. H de Lautour'e colours. This is his first success iii the Dominion, though he won four races in Ireland, Brambletye, who scored in the big handicap at Timaru yesterday, had not won previously this season. Her best performanco was when she finished close up third in the Winter Cup. Tho Now Zealand-bred Doad was made favourite in the Hurdle Hace, two milcß, at Eosehill on December 8, but when winning comfortably he relapsed into his old habit of falling at the last fence. P. Higgott's horses for tho West Ooaet campaign were shipped yesterday. P. Brady, who had a very successful innings on the coast twelvo months ago, will again do the trip and steer Higgott's horsee. Tho O.J.C. Oaks winiisr Impediment has been left in tho Royal Stakes and Derby at EUorslie, but this is probably an overeight, and it ie fully anticipated that tho • Demosthenes filly will be racing at Awapuni on Boxing Day. There is overy reason to anticipate a keon contest for tho Great Northern Foal Stakes as the field Includes a more even I lot of two-year-olds than was the case in former years. There are no Biplanes nor Hynicstraa to overshadow tho others on Boxing Day, and In Informal, winner of the Wollcsley Stakes, Avondale Stakes, and A.R.O. Weloomp, Stakes, 80-Pcep (O.J.C. Welcome Stakes), also Finmark, Kilhopo, and Pontoon, there is the material for a splendid race. The Melbourne Oup winner Saaanof gave another taste of his quality in the principal event, at the HoboWU Meeting on Decembpr 8, which, he won after starting a hot favourite. He did not get to good a run, but got up in time to win by si head. The Welcome Stakes winner 80-Peep, accompanied, by another two-year-old filly iii Philomel, started for Auckland yesterday in charge of W. Telford. Phllomol was sent mainly as a travelling companion for 80-Peep, hut it i 3 likely that she will ho given a run in one of the handiciuis before she returns. A. Reed will ride BoPeep in the Foal Stakes, but so far no rider has been secured for the illly in tho Eoyal Stakes. Oarbiness. who was amongst tho unplaned division in the Haok Hurdles at Woodville. 6cored over fences at tho Waipa Moetinsr on Saturday. Ashley Eeed, the well-known Tronthara lightweight, was married in Wellington on Saturday morning. Later in the day he and his bride left for Auckland, whore they will remain till after the A.E.O. Jiceting.
