A BUSY DAY
IMPERIAL SOLDIER'S CASE
The Third Military Service Board rcsumod its sitting yesterday morning. Mr. ]). M. Findlay presided, and with him wero Messrs. J. Mack and A. O'L. Coiisidine. The Wellington Patent Slip Company, for whom Mr. W. A. Kennedy appeared, appealed on behalf of John Paterson, slipmaster, classed as, 'Cl. It was stated that Paterson's work was of extreme importance. Ho had to examine every vessel before it was allowed on the Slip. It was also stated that Paterson had met with an accident by which he had fractured bvth legs. The boarded decided to adjourn the appeal sine die. The company also appealed on behalf of William Higlmt, patternmaker. It was claimed that at the present time patternmakers were very scarce, and it would ho difficult to replace Highat. The appeal was iidjourned sine die on the usual conditions. The City Corporation appealed on bohalf of Henry Harold Brinkman, i second electrician, Tramway Powerhouse. Mr. Morton, the City Engineer, ' explained that Brinkman had taken I the placo of another -who had gone to , ) tho front, and if he were compelled to go into camp there would be no one to take his place. The appeal was adjourned to April next. As James Robertson Thompson' 3 personal appeal was favourably considered by another board, the employer's appeal was withdrawn. Thomson is the chief engineer of the Waipa Collieries, Ltd. Three slaughtermen—-Francis John Joseph, Maurice Jury, and James North—appealed on public grounds, and their appeals tvere supported by the Wellington Meat Exnort Company, Ltd. The appeals were adjourned sine die on the. usual conditions. The appeal of Albert Markßarr, apprentice to marine engineering, was dismissed, but the chairman stated that the appellant would go into camp with the May draft. Bijph Smith, printing machine engineer, on whose belialf the "New Zealand Times" Company, Ltd., appealed, was granted exemption until April. The adjourned appeal of Walter B. Perrott was dismissed, the board to recommend that he be not called up before April 30. John Renton Williamson, warehouse manager {or Alexander Cowan and Sons, Ltd., was granted exemption until Anril next on tho application of his employers'. Stephen S. Lamb, ploughman, Kormtaroa, who appealed on the stronnd that he waa over age, liad his appeal granted. Frank Ross, the Boys' Institute Director, on whose behalf the authorities of the institute appealed, was granted exemption until May 28, 1918. Leave until April next was granted Charles Steven Oaskin. dairy and sheep farmer, North Matara. The appeal of Clifford C. Bn\ham, C Company, Thirty-fifth Reinforcements, was adjourned to next month. Sir John Fiudlay appeared on behalf nf a sheepfarmer in the Wanganui hinterland named Montgomerv. who with his family was now in England doing farm work, to ask for a rt> hearing of the appeal of John TCrnost Barrow, formerly manager for Montgomery and now a. private in D Company, Thirty-third Reinforcements. Sir John, after quoting the Act giving.his client the richt to obtain a rehearing, stated that Bnrron himself was willing to go to the front, but hf> renognisod that lie owed a duty to Montgomery. There was no request for exemption, but the board was asked to grant Barron leave until such time as Montgomery could return to the Dominion. TJuring the hearins of thi' case Mr. D. G. A. Frederick William Donaldson, motorman, appealed on the ground of rinduo hardship. Ho stated that ho had two brothers at the front, and another brother was turned out of camp pftor being there twelvr , months. Appellant had enlisted in 1915. hnt was turned down unfit. Ho maintained that the .family wou'd suffer because he was the nvecntor of his late father's estate. There werp eight houses which wero fill l°t. Ho had solo control of the pstatn.
