THE COST OF LIVING

London, December 16. The second report of the Select Committee on National Expenditure recommends the Government as far as possiblo to avoid the creation of new credits for financing the war, Mid to institute an inquiry into the actual cost of living to workers. It advocates that the limitation of profits should U continued and strengthened. The Committee also recommends the prevention of advances in wages except where absolutely necessary to meet the cost of living. It urges the strengthening of the Treasury staff by the inclusion of men of ability end administrative experience from outside, with a view to closer supcrnsioii to prevent competition, and the checking of undue profits by contractors. Ine report points out that an all-round increaso of 10 per cent, in wages and the cost of commodities purchased at homo would involvo an increase of ouo hundred and thirty millions a year— Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
