INTIATIVE ON WESTERN FRONT STILL HELD BY ALLIES
GERMANY BLUFFING FOE PEACE
PRESSURE ON ITALIANS LIGHTER
HEAVY LOSSES INFLICTED ON THE ENEMY
Mr. Newton D. Baker, United States Secretary for War, in a bracing dispatch to-day, declares that the initiative in the West is still ours; that tho Germans, literally with their last ounce of effort, are bluffing for advantageous peace terms. The official reports disclose no material change in tho situation in tho West. On tho Italian front the terrific pressure which has been maintained, at frightful cost to themselves, by the Austro-German troops between the Piave and tho Brenta, during last week, has appreciably diminished. In Russia tho Bolshevik! still hold tho reins of authority, tho Constituent Assembly is a farce, and the peace armistice has beon signed. Operations will now bo suspended on land, air, and water till January 14. The ex-Tsar is reported to have escaped.
