SOCIAL AND PERSONAL Patriotic Garden Party at' Lower Hutt On Saturday afternoon a very successful garden party, organised by the Hutt-Tnitu Patriotic Shop Committee in aid of their day at tho Hec Cross Shop, was held at "Rangiaho," tho residence of Mrs. D. T. Cameron, Main Iload, Lower Hutt. Tho weathci was delightful and a great many peoplo, about GOO at least, wero present and found much to entertain them in the grounds, which, always delightful to look upon, aro especially so at this time of tho year. The Trcntham Band was present, and its musio added a groat deal to the pleasure) of tho afternoon. Snorts, including races, potatc races, pillow fighting, Aunt Sally, a shooting gallery, (bandsmen's races, etc., organised by a very energetic men's committee, were held in Mr. M'Gregor's paddock at tho back of the house, and attracted very many competitors. Special races for children wero also held and created much interest amongst tho small folk. A stal: for flowers and produco received a great amount of attention,.so much so, that it was sold out. There was also a keen demand for strawberries and cream, cool drinks, ice creams, fruit salad, etc., and a large Christinas tree, covered with toys and noveltie? for children, was ontiHv tHnicWl Afternoon tea in tlie henutiful rose garden did equally well, and as a tosuit of tho afternoon an amount between £70 aivl £80 is anticipated to result. Several competitions were held, the winners of which wero as follow:—Mrs. M'Kinloy, a largo Christmas cake; Mr. Lewis, n box of tea; Mr. Broderick, a pair of fat ducks; Mrs. Meek, a camisole: Miss Anson, a boudoir cap: Miss Holdon. a doll; Mrs. Hill, another eloll: onrl Bandsman Jeffreys, a set of table billiards. Quantities of flags disposed about tlie grounds added much to their picturesque appearance.

Captain J. C. Simpson, N.Z.M.C., was married at Balnafettack, Inverness (Scotland) on September 27 tc Miss Elizabeth. Ogilvie, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Bimie, of Balnafettack. Miss Coull, who has been the guest of Mr. and Mrs. R. Baxter, Sumner, for some weeks, returns to Day's Bay to-day. Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Miller, of Hastings, have secured a flat at Lyall Bay for tho Christmas and New Year holidays. Before going out to the bay they will stay for a week at the Midland Hotel. Mr. Miller is chairman of the Hastings Chamber of Commerce. Mr. and Mrs. Sydney Martcll, of Hastings, have taken Dr. C. E. Adams's residence in Telford Terrace, Oriental Bay, for the next few weeks. They motored through from Hastings yesterday. Mr. F. M. Qiiiglcy, secretary of tho Hastings Chamber of Commerce, intends to motor through to New Plymouth at Christinas. At a meeting of directors of tlio Thorntlon Bowling Club held on Friday evening the president reported that tho ladies' stall for soldiers' Christmas gifts paid in the sum of £!H 17s. «I. as tho result of their day's work to the general fund. A vote of appreciation to Mrs. R. J. Collins and tier assistants was passed, and tho sccre. tary was instructed to convey it l.y letter. Tlio members' contributions amounted to £25 Is. 6d., mailing a total of £79 18s. lid. Tho "Hawko's Bay Herald'' says that instructions havo been cabled to tho Church Army headquarters to name a hut "Tlio Ormondvillo Hut," Mrs. J. D. Ormoiul, of Napier, Laving sunt a handsome sum for a hut to bo given to the soldiers in memory of tho late Eon. J. D. Orniond, whoso pioneer work for the Dominion is kept in mind by tho 'name of tlio town "Ormondville." The death has taken place u Nurse Rutland, a well-known resident of tho l'almerston North district. Private C. L. Rutland, who was killed at Gallipoli, was si son of tho deceased lady, also Private- Cyril Rutland, who was wounded recently in Flanders.

Lady M'Lciin and Miss M'Lwiti. arrived in Wellington yostc/day morning by the Maori from tho south. The lectures given by Dr. J-J, D. Bedford at tho Y.M..C.A* include three for women and men, as well as the ono I for men only. To-night, at 8 o'clock, Miss M'Leaii, M.A., will take the chair, and Dr. Bedford will speak on ''Tho Woman/' with special rolereiico to Nature's provision lor combating disease; tho sacredness of family life; tho | the appeal to chivalry.

MATTERS OF INTEREST FROM FAR AND NEAR

Wellington Red Gross Shop, Tho Hobson Street and Hobsrm Crescent workers made a tine finish lo the year's effort on Friday, and handed in over £1590. This largo sum had been collected in raffles, orders, and sales in tho shop. There wero many beautiful raffles which created a great deal of interest and brought the money from far and near. Tho linen chest, for which Mrs. Hilev worked so energetically, raised £1000; the kitchen outfit, which Miss G. Nathan was responsible for, brought over £160; and Miss Joseph's doll's house and doll's trousseau brought another large sum. Tho doll's _ houso and furnishings was a j beautifully-conceived idea. Tho houso was large and picturesque, and mado by the clever hands of Mr. Trigger, Miss Joseph's gardener, who in this way gave his donation to the lied Cross. Tlio rooms oponcd from tho sides of tho house, so that the child could play with ono room (or all) at a time. Each room was beautifully furnished with articles picked up by Miss Joseph in France and England! The whole house was un'que, and would be a, delight to the winner. All the stalls wero well filled, wid' brought many buyers. Tho cakes wero all home-made, and cama in quantities, and tho sweets wero as usual of the best. Miss Joseph had many orders for her Christmas boxes of chocolates, and thev formed a larse part of her stall. The flowers sold well, and were beautiful. Altogether tho day's effort and the return from it was one to bo proud of. These workers having during the Tear raised over £3000 for the Side and Wounded Soldiers' Fund, and tho committee of the Red Cross Shop appreciates their promiso to continue, the work during next year. Mrs. Duthio, Mrs. do B. Brandon and Mrs. A. Myers, who havo been the organisers, are to be congratulated on their work. Tho shop will be closed till February 15, 1913, ivhen it will open with a large country Jay.

'A' very cnjoyablo Christmas part} for convalescent ox-hospital soldier! was given last week l)v Mr. and Mrs Hempton at their residence in Thompson Street. There wero a great many guests present, and with dancing, singing, competitions, games, and billiarc matclies they thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The winners of the competitions were Miss Dimock and Private Welby, Cheers and the singing of "For Thej aro Jolly Rood Fellows" in honour oi the host and hostess ended the -pleasantest of parties. At the Ansae Club, Feathertsnn, on Friday night Mesdames W. Howard Booth. B. Speedy, and AV. Toogood wero tlio hostesses on the occasio.n of the weekly dance so popular with soldiers. A special orchestra from the camp, in the absence on holiday leave of bandsmen, provided the music, and extras were played by Mesdames Wickens and Oliver, Misses Kilmartin, Toogood, Bish. and Palmer. Thn local dances pro to bo discontinued till nftoi the holidays. A very enjoyable "brsaking-np social" was held in St. Hilda's Schoolroom, Island Bay, by the pupils of Mrs. A. Hill. Choruses, dances, and songs were'rendered«in fancy costumes, also the "Mad Tea-party" scene from "Alice in Wonderland." At the close of the entertainment refreshments were handed round, during which Mr.- E. A. Odlin congratulated Mrs. Hill on her success' in training the little ones, and Miss Doris Neal presented her with a handsome bouquet. Santa Claus re* eeived £5 for the funds, and further donations can bo sent to the treasurer, Mr. A. Greig, 203 Clyde Street, Island Bay.
