THE DAIRYING INDUSTRY
BEGINNINGS OF CHEAT THINGS,
For reasons iliat need not be. enlarged upon here the Hawke's Bay district generally has been a late starter as far as the'dairying industry is concerned. Perhaps it is that times have been too easy for people to tackle the ceaseless work so necessary in dairying. Whatever has been the cause the inhabitants have never taken the interest . in tho cow that their comrades on the western side of the island have. But of recent years there has been an awakening'as to the enormous possibilities of dairying on these fat, flat lands of Hawke's Bay, and tho good prices offering for- butter and cheeso
are playing a part in the awakening, and dairying is now flourishing round ?aveluck ivorth, Ciive, Tinyl'ord, mid likelni. The Heretaunga Co-opera-tive Dairy Co. has liow an annual output of 200 tons of butter; there is a proprietary factory at Clive turning out 100 tons, and D. Nathan and Co. have a cheese, factory at Taradale putting out .something like 200 tons a year. Five years ago the Heretaunga Company's output was only 100 tons-to-day it is 250 tons. Five years ago there was no factory at all at Waipukurau; 10-day there is one putting out 200 tons of butter per annum. There are those who have been interested only in sheep all their lives who have heard "the call of the cow." and have already made a start with the accumulation of good dairy herds, and there are active inquiries almost daily for good dairying lauds from outsiders —and it is all good dairying laud n" ; ug to the fine, deep, well-watered soil.
