STERNER TONE IN THE CAMPAIGN
REFLEX OF THE WAR OUTLOOK

Sydney, December 14. The recent developments on the war fronts have had a. calming effect on the referendum turmoil, and there is evidence that the issue is now regarded more seriously by tho electorate than it was a short timo ago. Tho sterner tone that is being adopted by the leading "Yes" advocates, and the growing conviction 'that, conscription or no conscription, a. greater effort is required by Australia as part of the Empire before the end is reached, are factors making for a westward drifu of opinion. SpeakiufS at Goelong, Mr. W. M. Hughes, the Federal Prune Minister, reiterated the declaration: "If these proposals are turned down, I will no what I am able to see that reinforcements are sent overseas, making no exceptions whatever."—Press Assn.
