GOVERNMENT AFTER-WAR . PLANS. By Telegraph.—Press.Association. Whakatane, December 12. The new freezing works at Whakatane was opened yesterday by the Prime Minister, in the presence of a larco gathering, including the Hons. W Eraser, AV. H. Herrics, AV. D. S. Mac Donald, and A. T. Ngata, and Sir James Carroll. In the evening the visitors were tendered a public dinner by the people of the district, wlien nearly three hundred persons were present. In the course of liis speech, Mr. Massey said the Government was tolling all measures so as to be ready when peace came. Most of the plans were matured, and were peace declared' to-morrow New Zealand's troops could begin demobilising _at once. Puhhc works would immediately absorb 12,000 men. • The Government must pursue a vigorous works policy. It was intended to push on development on a lnrge scalo. The Premier predicted a big future for the town of Whakatano: it "would not be long before it would have ten times its present population.
