SCHOOL EXAMINATIONS
'A COMPLAINT AND AN ANSWER,
Tho strain put upon school children by the number of examinations to which they vrero subjected was referred to in newspaper correspondence recently. At tho meeting of the Education Board Mr. Rishworth spoke of this correspondence, and asked the Chief Inspector for information. Tho Chief Inspector said that at the inspector's annual visit all classes in a school were tested in tho work covered up till that time, of the year. The general examination for promotions from standard to standard was held by the head teacher at tho . end of tho year. The examination of candidates for proficiency was with a few exceptions held by the inspector some time in October, November, or. early in De- '. cember. It was unavoidable that in some cases these examinations sliould come rather close together. Tho inspector further explained that the work done at all three examinations ■ was taken into consideration in the granting of proficiency ccrtificatos. Ho was not prepared to discuss matters in connection with the . policy of tho Department. . "
