LOWER HUTT AFFAIRS
MEETING OF BOROTJGH COUNCIL,
Last evening's meeting of the Lower Hutt Borough Council was presided over by the Mayor (Mr. H. Baldwin). There were present: Councillors J. A. M'Dongall, W. Meldrum, W. Walton, J. Brassel, AV. Cotton, AV. Kerr, A. Hobbs, and S. Clendon. On the motion of the Mayor, tne council rescinded a resolution to order a pump for £365 and decided to order a. pump of another pattern for the sum of £485 from the same firm. There was auite a warm little discussion upon, the application of \\. J. Haves for pormissiou to keep his billiard saloon' open till 11 p.m. instead of 10 p.m.—the closing hour stipulated in his licence. The Mayor thought that 10 p.m. was "quite late enough to have lads about the streets," and anyway the by-law required that the saloon should close at ten. He put the 'question to the meeting, though, and when the voices were heard a- division was asked for. This tho Mayor refused. The by-laws covered the matter, he said, and ho had put the motion "in a wealc moment." The'council accepted the .explanation, and the question dropped. The question of tne J'etone Council s T jrrht to run its motor buses m iho borough of Lower Hutt was raised nrrain bv the reply of the Petone Council to the Hutt Council's letter of obThe Mayor informed the council, that a conference would be held with members of the Petone Council in order to arrive at an tinderstanduig. The matter was therefore left in abeyance for the time being. The engineer reported that the wain engine at the waterworks pumping station broke down on December 4. liepairs were being effected, and_ in the meantimo both pumps were being, run by the other engine. Consumers nad been asked to exercise economy in the use of water. In the engineer's opinion there was little doubt that the present machinery had nearly readied the limit of its usefulness. , The council decided to hold its next meeting on Thursday 1 week.
