Sir,—lt is quite true that there is no vacancy in' 'Wellington North, but there may he one any minute now, and when there is. an -attempt by a premature and ill-considered announcement that a certain man has received the Government nomination, when that, so far, is a doubtful quantity, it is time for the electors \o bestir themselves naid find a candidate that will suit them. But if the agitation is premature, who brought it about? Mr. Luke is responsible for the prematureness of tho agitation, because he himself announced the Government candidate The electors of Wellington North w\\ not consider Mr. Luke at all as Mr. Herdman's successor, and it was ',he announcement that Mr. Luke would probably be the Government's nominee that brought about the agitation to select a more worthy candidate. It is correct to sav that Mr. Luke had worked well as Mayor, but Mrs. Luke has done better. Mrs. Luke has not been announced as the Government candidate, and Mr. Luke has done no more than his position warranted his undertaking. Who is questioning Mr. Luke's public honesty or loyaltyr , "Voter" says: "Mr. Luke will never "0 back, on us." What bapnened to Mr. Luke tho Liberal? What happened to Mr. Luke the Independent? What happened to Mr. Luke the Conservative? What happened to Mr. Luke the Reformer? Mr. Luke is everything by turns and nothing long. We want a man of sWdfnstnws of character and purpose, like Mr. Herdnian. We want a man of broad, tolerant views in Wellington North. We want no extremist in any direction. Tho electors have declared that Mr. Luke cannot be ac-cepted.-I am, etc., 1 [We have received other letters very similar to those already published concerning the anticipated vacancy for the Wellington North seat. Some favour the suggested Government candidate, others "criticise the selection mnde. Wβ cannot give further space in our correspondence columns to a discussion of this nature.]
