MAGISTRATE'S COURT

SATURDAY'S SITTING.

Mr. S. E. M'Carthy, S.M., presided over a sitting of the Magistrate's Court on Saturday morning. Lauritz Cliristensen, a Danish seaman, pleaded guilty to charges of insobriety and absence without leave from his vessel. He was sentenced to a fortnight's imprisonment with hard labour.

Samuel Snellgrove, a seaman, gtilty of being absent from his ship without leave, was sentenced to a fortnight's imprisonment. The police withdrew a charge if attempted suicide which they had preferred against Hamilton Perry. Perry was before- the Court a week ago because ho had deliberately jumped over a oliff at Island Bay. Ho was remanded for medical observation, and by Saturday he had been placed under proper Thomas William Robson (Mr. G._ G. G. Watson) took proceedings against James Williams (Mr. Beeohey) in o'dor to havo the latter bound over tr> ketp tho peace. He alleged that Williams while drunk used provoking and insulting language to him, challenged him to fight, and actually assaulted him.. The dfifenco was a sweeping contradiction of the complainant's statement. His Worship ndjourned tho case sino die, and warned the parties to be more careful of their behaviour in future. For being found in a state of helpless drunkenness, Bartholomew Mahoney was fined 20s», with medical expenses (17s. 6d.).
