ANNUAL'MEETING,
Tho annual, meeting of shareholders of the Wellington. Publishing Company (The Dominion newspaper) was held at tho.'Chamber of Commerce yesterday, Mr. James Macintosh, chairman of directors, presiding. ' Tho annual report (which recommended the payment of a dividend at thor rate of 5 per cent.) and the bal-ance-sheet ivero adopted. Tho chairman, in reviewing the year's operations, congratulated shareholders on the result shown. Newspapers, ho pointed out, had been passing through an anxious time owing to tho scarcity and high pricos ruling for printing paper. The price of paper, owing to the high' shipping freights and increased cost of production, had more than doubled, and in many cases trebled in tfost to New Zealand nowspaner proprietors; and the outlook was still full of'anxiety. Tho business of the company continued to expand in spite of the Handicaps of war conditions, but the cost of working naturally showed a substantial increase. The retiring directors, Dr. G. E. Anson and Mr. H. Williams; nnd the retiring auditors, Messrs. Hunt - and Menzics, 'were re-elected.
A vote of thanks to the staff wns moved by the Hon. J. Gf. W. Aitken, who specially stressed the loyal and capable service rendered, by all departments during the difficulties created by the strike at the gas works.
