A DARING COUP IN PALESTINE
r HOW A WELSH COMPANY BLUFFED
THE TURKS
WHOLE BATTALION TAKEN {PRISONER
(Rec. December 7, 9 p.m.)
London, December 6. Renter's correspondent at Headquarters in Palestine details a daring exploit_ connected with the incidental fighting during the present lull in our offensive. A company of dismounted .Welsh Yeomanry advanced to the ullage of Beiture el Fort, which the iTnrks were supposed to be ' holding lightly, • and. were (iiirprised to find a full,,battalion of Turks standing for evening parade. Though greatly outnumbered the Welsh : officer determined to attempt a coup. Hβ posted his men, and sent an interpreter forward to inform the ; Turks that they were surrounded by superior forces, ami order them to surrender. The Turks were prepared .to comply,' when a German officer- shouted: "Fight it out!" iind led a rush to the piled stacks'of rifles. A sharp fight followed. The German officer and a number of Turks were knocked put, and thefemainder, about five hundred, surrendered. The Welsh attempted to shepherd their captives towards our lines, but the Turkish posts in, the vicinity apparently 'thought it was a British force, and opened fire, and stampeded the prisoners, enabling some to escape. But' over three hundred were brought in. The'latest reports state that the Turks have withdrawn from Hebron, but are still holding Bethlehem in force. '.Some troops and gun? are in the vicinity of Jerusalem.—Reuter. ■ i
