Cardon Party at Foatherston. An ejoyabio "at home," which took tho form of a garden party was held by Colonel and Mrs. N. P. Adams at "Longwood" on Wednesday aftornoon. Among tho guests was a predominance of khaki, officers from both Fcatherston and Trentlmm Camps being present in numbers. Among these woro Colonel 11. R. Totter, C.M.G. and Mrs. Potter, Colonel C. 11. Macdonald, J.G.S., and Mrs. M'Donnld, LieutenantColonel Graham Robertson, Major and Mrs. Neville Newcombe, and Major Bey, as well as nurses, in uniform, from the various military hospitals in the district The guests included many civilian residents of the Wairarapa, who have taken prominent partß in providing for the welfare and comfort of soldiers. The Featherston Trmnnct Band and tho Camp Band played throughout tlie afternoon. In tho" perfect weather which prevailed tho sceno was a brilliant and picturesque one, the lawns, well shaded by the trees which surround tho beautiful home, being thronged. Tt was altogether a summer gathering, and one which will not soon bo forgotten by those who enjoyed Colonel and Mrs. Adams's hospitality. Proof that the guests came from far and near was to be found in the imposing array of cars which were parked in the grounds, nnd wiiieii made the marls assume a. busv appearance when tho party finally broke up. A Children's Entertainment. Tho first annual entertainment given In- the children attending St. Mark's Church School, with Miss A. Holm as director and organiser, was held in St. Mark's Schoolroom last evening. Tho programme consisted of songs, recitations, and faney dancing, and the following contributed-.—Fairy tableau, tbi> children: display of too dancing, Hilda Clift, Marjorw AUineham, EdnaPurdio; dance, Nsrairo Williamson; recitation, Hilda' Clift; Irish jig, Daisy Vickors. Edna Purdie, Marjorie Ailingham, Hilda Clift, and Frances Mather; song and dance, "Lassies from Lancashire," several of tho children; recitation. Bere Beekway; Scotch dance, Annie Grant; recitation, the Rev. Mr. Keay: tambourine dance (in costume), Several children. Stalls for cakes, sweats, produce, miscellaneous, flowers, and a tea-room woro in charge of tho children, and were exceedingly well patronised, a considerable amount of money resulting during tho afternoon alone. A Christmas treo in tho ce_ntro of iho room, well laden with fascinating toys, was tho ccntro of attraction to tho small people. Sale of Work. A successful sale of work was held in Trinity Methodist Schoolroom on AVcdhesday last. Tho Mayoress (Mrs. J. P. Luko) opened the- salo in tho afternoon, and in the cotirso of a helpful address, congratulated tho ladies upon the excellence and quantity of goods displayed. During thrt evening tho Young Men's League conducted an entertainment in the infant classroom, as a nigger minstrel troupe, and Miss Chapman gave selections on the piano in the main hall. Good business was dono in all departments, and £56 secured for trust funds.
Mrs. Rose and Mrs. Douglas, Woodville, aro in town, staying at tlio Hotel Cecil. A meeting of the Trustees of theWellington Convalescent Home was held at Mrs. Litchfield's on Wednesday. There >vere present Mesdamtfs W. S. Moorhousc (in the chair), A. Martin, Joseph Joseph, W. Young, Litchfiekl. Miss Harcourt (lion, treasurer), and Miss Miles (hon. secretary). Apologies wore received from Mrs. Watkins and Miss Coates. A donation of £100 was gratefully acknowledged from the M'Carthy Trust. The military section of the Auckland AYomen's National Reserve has added to its activities tho carp of soldiers' graves, and also historical graves in that part of the country. The wedding of Lieutenant Annandale, R.F.C, and Mies Theodora Caldwell, of York, which took place at All Souls' Church, Ascot, on September 19, was an air service wedding. Captain Evans, a chaplain of the Flying Corps, conducted tho service; Airnian-Meelinnie ,Drake, tlio youngest Fellow of tho Royal College of Organists, was at the organ; a Flying Corps officer was best man; a choir of non-commissioned officers and air mechanics sang the hymns and psalms, and officers and men of the Flying Corps formed the congregation. Dr. Ettie Lyons, late of the Sydney Medical Mission, has gone to Taralga, where she has been appointed Government medical officer. Miss Wright, who lias worked with her at the mission, accompanied her. Mr. C. J. and Mrs. Reakes are vifitiing Auckland and Rotorua. Miss Mabel Downes arrived in Wellington liisfc evoning from Masterton. Tho Ladies' Auxiliary of the Navy League- acknowledges with thanks parcels of warm clothing and comforts for the men of the lesser craft of the Fleet from the following:—Mrs. Miller, Hastings; Marton Ladies' Keep-on League; Mrs. Oswald Johnston, Mis. Women's National Reserve, It must he very gratifying to the promoters of tho teas for mothers of the Empire to see tho way the scheme is rapidly growing. They are being hold all over tho country. On Saturday week a most successful one took' place at Jlastcrton, and was well attended and most appreciated. A largo, number of mothers applied for badges. At New Plymouth they woro inaugurated during Sir James Allen's visit thoro. Tho Minister opened tho function, and spoke culogistically of tho plan. At Waitara last week they held their first gathering, a most successful one. As well as from their own district, there were representatives from Waihi, Tikorangi, Huirangi, Waitara, Road, and Lopperton. The ball was beautifully decorated, and a good programme of cheerful vocal and pianoforte musio was provided. The function was social in every sonso of tho word, with not a. dull or stiff moment from start to finish.
Hawera in having a largo Christmas party on Saturday to launch their scheme, and it promises to b/> a great success. At Eltham the Mayoress is arranging for a large garden 'party to entertain tho mothers, and start the movement there. Stratford bad » very successful gathering of the samo kind last week, the Mayor and Mayoress being interested in the movement. The Mayoress of Wanganui gavo a delightful garden party on November 30 < A large number attended, and many mothers applied for badges. This activity goes far to show how this idea, appeals to all truly patriotic people, who realise the heavy debt we all owo those brave women who have, and are, doing so nobly for tha Empire in its hour or need. The stress and strain is borne uncomplainingly and courageously bv them all.
Mre. J. J. Imcona. (Toko) and Mr. H. Lucena are visiting relatives in Masterton.
A challenge has been issued by ]} Company of the Thirty-fifth Reinforcements for tho best concert to bo given in tho Salvation Army Institute at Fcatherston. Tho matron and nurses at the Camp Hospital are to bo tho judges, and the prizes will bo a group, photo, of Urn whole company to each member of tho winning concert party, aud an enlargement to the organises of the party. This is expected to bring out a good deal of talent, as in every reinforcement thero are excellent singers and elocutionists.
