Tainui—No. 13 (south) Queen's Wharf. THE MONOWAI. The Monowai is due ot Wellington tomorrow morning direct from Auckland, aB she left the northern port one day late in her running. At 5 p.m. to-morrow she will sail for Lyttelton and Dunedin. THE NGATORO. The Blackball Coal Company's Ngatoro will leave Whangaroa to-night, where she is loading timber for discharge at Wellington. On arrival here on Saturday from Napier, general cargo from Auck- i land, cement from Whangarei, and timber will bo unloaded, and on Monday the vessel will sail for New Plymouth. BLENHEIM FOR. KENEPURU SOUND. Messrs. Johnston and 00. advise that the Blenheim will sail for Kenepuru Sound at 3 o'clock this afternoon instead of on Monday as had been arranged previously. Tho harbour terry steamer Duchess will go on to the slip for cleaning and painting on Wednesday or Thursday next! Tho oollier Ngalmta is duo at Wellington next week from Greymouth. The auxiliary schooner Fairburn sailed from Auckland on Saturday for Wellington <ind Lyttelton with a, cargo of explosives for the Nobel Explosive Company (says a northern exchange). Tho vessel should put in an appearance about Saturday or Sunday. Mr. F. J. Dickey, chief engineer on the Palcena, came ashore yesterday. Mr. W. Cairns fourth engineer on the Maori also came ashoro. Tho Huia will arrive at Wellington this morning from Wanganui, and to-morrow afternoon will sail for Wanganui, New Plymouth, and Waitara. This afternoon the Tainui. .which is due from byttolton this morning, will sail for Wanganui. Cargo will be received until 4 o'clock. On Saturday the vessel will arrive at Wellington from Wanganui. ncd return to that port on the same day. On her way from Nelson to Lyttelton and Dunedin, the Putiki will arrive at Wellington this morning. Cargo for the southern ports will he taken in here. Yofterday afternoon the Wootton arrived from Lyttelton, and at 5 p.m. today Trill return to that port. Cargo for BlufT will be taken by a Union Company's cargo steamer which will sail for that port to-morrow. The New Zealand Refrigerating Company's Mana sailed yesterday for Lyttelton from which port she is due at Wellington on Saturday. On Monday she will sail for Wanganui. G. T. Hull and Co. adviße that, the John iB due bnck at Wellington on Monday morning from Dunedin and Oamaru. The vessel is scheduled to sail on Monday afternoon for Wanganui. The Kahu sailed for Castlepoint yesterday afternoon to lift a load of wool for Wellington, where she is due to-morrow morning. She will sail again in the afternoon for tile East Coast. The raising of the standard of Uto examination for qualification an officers of the mercantile marine has been the subject of much adverse comment among shipping men. The general opinion i 3 that tho former standard is ouitc sufficient for all practical purposeß, and that the additional time required to absorb t-toa largely increased amount of theoretical knowledge neccs&ary to enable men aspiring to become officers in the iner* cantile marine to pass the new teßts could be more advantageously spent in becoming conversant with the practical side of seafaring life.
