WOODVILLE MEETING DEVOTION WINS THE OOP.
(B.v Telegranh—Special Correspondent,) Woodvllle December 5. The Woodville Jockey Club's Meeting opened in perfect weather. Tho attoudance waß large, patrons coming by from Taranaki, Wanganul, Wellington, and Hawke'a Bay. There wero big fields, and Interesting racing. Tho sum of £21.010 was put through tho machine, against '£16,415 for tho corresponding day last year. The Hack Hurdles was a grand race, and ono of tho beat jumping events ever seen on the course. Calais and Veto wero the public fancies. Tho early running waa made by Otter, who led a bunched field. Portland Lady, who got squeezed out at tho barrier, was in cbargo lmlf 0 mile from liome, and, attended by Foeman and Calais, aho led into the straight. Tatimi, who lmd been handy, then came faßt, and in a good finish beat the Porirua mare by a head. Foeman was third, and in a lino came Sir Solo, Veto, and Calais. Tho Maiden Plate contained eobic aristo-oratic-looking two-year-olds, including the Loivry-owned pair, Killowen and Kilhope, and War llarchi a very handsomo Martian -Two Step youngster, carrying Mr. A. B. Williams's colours. This trio wero much admired in tho bird-cagc. In the market Mill Queen waa only a few pounds worae favourite than tho Lowry bracket, while the remainder were neglected. At the barrier this trio drew tho outaido numbers, but they were quickly in front, and soon strung out the field. Mill Queen was in third place at the turn, where Killowen hung. out. Kilhope finished strongly, and easily held Mill Queen. Zela waa third. The winner and Killowen wero purchased by Mr. Lowry for 1000 guineas at the November sales in Obrlstchurch last year. They both look liko making good. Mystified' was preferred in tlie Grandstand Haok Handicap, from which there were numerous defections. The bay mare won after a good finish with Haatie. Lady Edith and Matilda were the first to become prominent, and with Hastic and Oello handy they led into the straight. Here Mystified earoo through, and ridden right out she just beat Hastie. Lady Edith waa two lengths away, and then came Oello, Matilda, and Oro Ore. The winner showed up well at Feilding, and the victory was anticipated by her connections.
Despite the good form of Devotion- at Feilding, the Trenthara mare waa allowed to pay a false return In the Woodville Cup. whioh she won very easily from Dribble, while Cleft was only a head away. Tho winner got a clear passage on the fenco tho whole way, and at no stage of the- race did A. Eeed have to cheok her. At the start Dribble showed tho. way to a bunohed Hold. Down the back Square Deal moved up to Dribble, and tho pair entered tho straight together. Then Devotion shot OUjJ, and won very easily. Bed Eibbon ran a good race and finished fourth, followed by Eangitero and Multiply.
Kudo saw a very short i.rice in tho Flying Hack Handicap, but 110 was beaten into third placo after a bad run. Ponnon waa •the first to show out, and she led Namur into the straight. Hore tile favourite appeared, but did not make any Impression m? Namur, who got up and beat Pennon. The Australian horse was third, and then oamo Vermilion and Hupana. Mulatto was prominent early, but a bad passage spoilt any ohance he had. Feilding form again worked out in the Electrio Handicap, in which Nanna Bcored decisively. .Tho.winner drew No. 2 at the barrier,, and despite a check when half tho journey. had been covered she came inthe straight, and, cutting down Trentham ?n se ' H au easi 'y from the locally-owned Ally. Bhiela was cloao third, and-then came Oroeaua, who drew tho outside and failed to teach tho front at any stage. Birkenette, Ayah, and Blairflndo finished oloie up. This makes tho third win in succession for Mr. Kemball's filly. Paddington Green was favourite In a good betting race for tho Hack Welter Handicap, and he pulled his backers through aftor a good finish, with an outsider in Quran's Post, who, with Te Onai, was in front practically throughout. First • a ffoo , d rao0 ' and finished close m 'i JU^, clea J" of (Jlavis v ß m A ', who , wcre in a I'ie. Belgian Maid broke a blood vessel and had to bo pulled up. After this race an inquiry was held into Bome bumpiner that ocourred,_.and -after the evidence of two or the _riders"had been taken it was adjourned. . SweetyTipperary led from end to end in tho Borough Welter Handicap. She was fct tif'v 5 by Triala oTer the last bit* but W. Young got the most out of her tnli won by Black Ada was tnird, then oame Ohiwai and Probation. By Telegraph—Proas Association. HACK HURDLES HANDICAP, of 100 soyb m,. ."B® and tliree-quarters.
