THE TURF

NOTES AND COMMENTS

fßl' GMNCOE.I

Bis field? are engaged in the varioiiß events at Woodville to-day, and the mect ; ing promises to be a record one. Class is well represented in the open events, and the racing should be keen and. exciting.

Tho oard will commence at 11.30 a.m. with the Hook Hurdles, in which Sir Solo, lOst. 121b., leads tlje way. Though ho has been placed twice in a National Hurdles, the old fellow is still a maiden over fences. Hack hurdle ovonts are probably run over too short a course to Buit tho Bon of Sir Laddo. who is only a plugger. Portland Lady, lOst. alb., raced fairly well at Riccaiton, and may do .bettor to-day, as tho class will not be so strong. A 101b. penalty will bring Oalais's weight up to 9st. 131b., but even with that he reads well. Veto, 9st. 91b., is on the improve, and may be in the 'front rank to-day. Of the remainder Faparess stays well.

P. Davis intends racing both his two-year-olds. Killowen and Kiihope, in the Maiden Plate, six furlongs. They will bo carrying about 141b. over weight for age, but this will enable them to be ridden by competent horsemen, and the bracket may be the favourite choice. Tho Trentham maro Matilda was finishing on at the right end of her race at Feilding. Mill Queen is another that will be fancied. Sb her form at Masterton was good.

The Grandstand Hack Handicap, seven furlongs, is headed by tho useful Polynesian, Bst. 71b. Faddington Green on the same mark, has none the best of tho figures, and may be passed over. Ohoreka. was noticed finishing on at Feilding, and seems to be coming back to form, a remark that also apples to Mystified, a place-getter at Feilding.

After her form at Feilding it will not be necessary to look further then Dovo. lion for tho fancy in the Cup. Chortle, Gold Soult, and Multiply, can all be expected to run good races, bat Trainer Telford may hold tho key to the position with tho Feilding winner.

The Flying Handicap Is run over a sixfurlongs course, and there is a good straight run out of the larrier, which gives a better chance to the horses not fortunate enough to find their feet quickiy. King's Armour may be troubled to successfully oarry 9st., and the Fordell representative Rude will be belter fancied than the top-weight. The rank and file are not a'good lot, and the be6t of them may bo Vermilion and Pennon. Rude haß been a most consistent performer this season, but ho has met with a lot of illluck in his races.

Twenty-two horses arc carded to compete in tho Eleotrio Handicap, five furlongs. As is the case with the majority of theso events, the ballot for positions materially affects the support en the machine, aocordde to runners. Feilding form points to Nanna, as Bho 1s a very quick beginner. Croesus. 9st. 131b.; may be troubled hy his weight over the last bit, but if favoured with a good position, the hacks will have a hard job to beat him. A likely sort at the bottom of the handicap is Astrophel, 7at. lib.

Though he has not won a iace for a considerable time. Blaclr All has been racing fairly well of late, and in the Welter Hack" Handicap to-day he is not meeting a good .lot, so his chance may be there. First Lino, who is in at tho minimum, la generally noticed finishing on in his races, but Black All is, the most seasoned of the field. • V The Borough Handicap, seven furlongs, i 1 the concluding event. Trials, who is M have the services of S. Eeid, may go out favourite, but if Ohiwia gets a .soft traok she may race a lot belter than sho hiis been dqinsr lately.

Owners and trainers are reminded that nominations for events to be decided at the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club's Summer Mcoting close with the secretary on Friday.
