ATTEMPT TO RETRIEVE CAMBRAI DISASTER
SANGUINARY BATTLE I FULL SWING WAR PESSIMISTS ; RINGING DENUNCIATION BY MR. BONAR LAW The chief event reported to-day is a violent attempt by the «n- ' emy to restore his line in the region of Cambrai. Attacking in heavy - force and with a reckless disregard of losses, the Germans at first made some headway, and by their own account captured 4000 prisoners and 'several batteries, but they were swept back by counterattacks, and Sir Douglas Haic reports that though tho battle is still proceeding the enemy has been completely repulsed. The important positions won by the British west of Cambrai have been all but completely restored. Further south the Germans hold some captured ground, including the village of Gonnelieu. . Additional indications are given of tho. declining prestige of the Bolsheviki in Russia, but on© report states that M. Kerensky has been arrested. An unchanged situation is reported: iu Italy, though it is stated that tho Germans have set fire to tho town of Udine, a long way behind their present front. An interesting .account is given of the existing situation in Palestine. Lord Lansdowne'e letter on the subject of peace oon- ' ditions has been unanimously repudiated by the Unionist Party, and is freely condemned in Great. Britain and other Allied countries.
