SOLDIERS ASSAULT A POLICEMAN

THREE MONTHS' IMPRISONMENT. (Bv Telegraph—Sneclal Corresnondont.) Ma6terton, November 29. Two soldiers, named W. J. Boss and J. S. Duncan, have been sentenced .to , three months' imprisonment by_ Featherston justices on two charges of assaulting a police constable on Saturday night last, and inciting others to do so. The trouble arose through tho men being put out of an hotel at the closing hour. One of the constables was rather badly mauled by the crowd, Duncan shouting "Come on, West Coasters, put the boot in." The justices commented strongly on the men's behaviour, and said the accused had committed a cowardly assault.
