THE SCOTTISH WOMEN'S HOSPITALS

A COMING VISITOR

It is not altogether realised m this country that the Scottish Women s Hospitals for war work, which, are staffed throughout by women, hold an unique place among the many organisations formed for the alleviation of tho anguish and horrors of war ' a ™' They are responsible to-day for 400 beds at Royaumont (France), 300 m Salonika, '240 near Monastir, two held hospitals of 200 beds in Rumania and have the medical supervision of 2000 Serbian refugees in Corsica. Their latest additions are-an orthopedic centre in Salonika, and a hospital of 200 beds in the French firing line. _ Neither tho typhus epidemic in Calais nor that in Serbia daunted the courage of the Scottish Women's Hospitals Units; they took part in the Historic Serbian retreat 0 F lfllo J and in Rumania they have worked in the firing lines, tending the wounded m the trenches and carrying them to the field clearing stations. Disease, danger, <iirt and death itself have been endured hv those women surgeons, nurses, chauffeurs, orderlies, stretcher-bearers, in pursuance of their work of mercy. Gratitude, honours, and decorations have hoen given to the Scottish Women's Hospitals hy the British Government and the Governments of France and Serbia. But their true reward has hcen the sight of recovering soldiers, of little children learning to forget the horrors of their flight from the Austrian*, and the fcnowledce that each man returned well ant whole to the ranks is helping to end ft'i's for the continuance of this noble work that they plead-and they plead with the assurance that iNow 'Zealand will join with every other portion of our Empire in sending generous support. It is with this object m view that Mrs. Ahhott will make an appeal lo the people of Now Zealand. Such a work necessarily entails a heavy expenditure of money, and if it is to continue, money must ho given. Mrs Abbott will arrive in New Zealandi from Australia next month, and she hopes, while in Wcllineton, to address a public meeting on hohalf of these uii.ts.
