THE CAREER OF THE APARIITA. _ 'J'ho Aparima on her initial Toyago proceeded from Dumbarton to Fiume, en tho Adriatic fiea, where she loaded horp.es for South Africa at tho time of tho Beer War. Sho then went to Delagoa Baj, whoro sho loaded for Calcutta. At tho Indian port she loaded eastern lueichandise, and while en route to New Zealand a firs broke out amongst hor cargo. The vessel put into Albany, where the firo was extinguished before any very serious damago had been done to tho ship. 6inco that time sho has been successfully cmployed in tho Indian and oversea trade. For several successive years the Aparima loaded wheat cargoes at Melbourne for various European Dorts. On one occasion Bhe discharged at Yonico and Bari, and on another occa-sion at Barcelona and Naples. It was. usual after these trips for the Aparima to proceed to Calcutta and load Eastern merchandise for New Zealand porta. For somo time since tho outbreak of war she has been enzaged on a special service. When tho ship Dartford waa discontinued as a training ship the Union Company had the cadets placed on board tho Aparima for training ai officers. She was particularly adapted for this purpose, in viow of her worldwido travels.

SHORTAGE OF SHU'WJtIGIITS. | At a sitting of the Military Sorvicc Board at Auckland last week, Erncßt. O. J. liailey, of Devonport, who was appealed for by his fatlior, pleaded public interest and occupation, as he was a ship, yacht, ami boa'. repairer, and foreman of his fathor's business, lie did not Uink his father could replace him. His v-ork was mostly the repairing coastal ant' trading vessels. There was a marked scarcity of shipwrights, and ho doubted whether, if ho woro taken, his father would bo able to carry on tho business, which comprised 90 per "cent, essential work. O. Bailey, shipbuilder, father of appellant, said iiis son was absolutely indispensable, Witness would have to .take charco in tho yard. As an all-round man, lub son could not bo replaced as foreman, which was an essential hand. Tho work for foreign trading vessels amounted to about 50 per cent. They did littlo pleasure boat repair work-. Be had a. eon in the office. Ono was on activo se.rvise. Witness superintended tho businoss, and secured orders. Labour was acutely short. On Major Conlan's suggestion, it was decided to secure a report, from tho Labour Department on the case, as it was s'l.cgested there were shipyards at present not fully engaged. . NIKAU DELAYED AT NELSON. .Messrs. Bannatyno and Co. received telegraphic advice last night that tl-e Nikau was unable to sail from Nelson last night au account ol minor repairs having to be eifectcd in the cnEineroom. Tho repairs will bo completed by to-morrow, and the steamer will sail in her usual running. Arrangements had l-een n'ade for her to ho docked at Wellington on Thursday for cleaning and nainting, but these hiive now been cancelled. COHINNA FOB DUNEDIN.' Tho Union Company were unable to dispatch tho C-orinna last night for L'unedin, Oamaru, and Timaru, and her sailing time has been put forward to to-day. Cargo will be .received nntil noon. This morning. the Oalm is due from Lyttelton, and this afternoon she will sail for Wanganui. The Pateena will come off the a'ip on Thursday morning, and will resume in the Wellington-Picton-NeUon sirvice on Friday. The Kowhai will sail to-night for Creymouth to load for Lyttelton. The Hinomoa sailed at 1.30 o'clock yesterday afternoon for her round trip of the South Island lighthouses. At Bluff there will be shipped a quantity of timber for buildine new lightkeepers' houses at Puysegur Point in place of the three buildings erected about 35 yesrs- npo, and which are now worn out. Carpenters will embark at Bluff, and after the Hinemoa has landed them, and the building material at Puysegur Point she will return to Bluff for another load, leaving about December 14 for the We6t Coast. She is scheduled to arrivo at Wellington about December 23 or 24. A. vessel that recently visited New Zealand lias had a most interesting career. She was sunk, and for two jears was lying on the sea bottom, when she was refloated and converted into a fivemasted fore and after schooner owing to the shortage of tonnage, and with the combination of steamer hull and sailing ship rig is said to present a rather peculiar appearance. Mr. J. Murray joined the Te Anau yesterday as second officer vice Mr. H. V. Evans, who came ashore. Mr. J. Plowman signed on the Monowai yesterday as first ofiicer, relieving Mr F. Dinsmore, who has joined the hulk I'artford as first officer during her tow to Dunedin.

The "Stin"of Saturday's date states that the coal in the bunkers of a veesel lying in port at Lyttclton becamo overheated, and it was deemed advisable to discharge about 500 tons into a coal hulk. The temperature in tho bunkers rose to lftldeg., and it was found necessary to requisition an iron hulk, as it was feared an outbreak of fire might result if the coal was placed in a wooden vessel. The Union S.S. Co. had tho contract for removing tl>i> coal, and tho lgen engaged wcra paid a very high rate of wages. Tho projected docking of the S'onowal at Lyttclton for painting and c.'eaninE has been cancelled.
The captain and quarter-master of an overseas vessel were charged at limaru a few dayß ago with having Dermitted a man to board the vessel without a pass, contrary to recently gazetted Emulations. In dismissing the charge, the magistrate said there had been laxity on the part of the authorities iji failing to keep a guard over the wharf. There were military polico in Timaru who had very little to do, and when an overseas vessel was in port their time ciuld he profitably employed in guarding 'the wharf. It was mentioned in evidence that about 250 passes were issued for the vessel while it was at limaru, and on being told that the tickets wero not collected after use the magistrate said they ought to have hcen, otherwise they might get into all sorts of undesirable hands.
There iB considerable activity in the shipbuilding industry at Hobart. Messrs.
