LOWER HUTT AFFAIRS
MEETING OF THE BOROUGH COUNCIL. Tho Lower - Ilutt Borough Council met last ovening. There were present the Mayor (Mr. H. Baldwin), Councillors Hobbs, Kerr, Cotton, Clondon, Brassel, Walton, Moldrum, aim Macdougall. Leave of absence was granted to Councillor Ward. Mr. W. L. Smith, secretary of tho Ilutt District High School, wroto respecting a site for dressing sheds. Ho suggested that ono should bo ouit. by gft* ' with a small portion partitioned off for adults, and. that-pegs be provided for hanging clothes on, and also that the shed bo reserved for ladies only. It was decided that one shed should be erected on the north Bide of the Hutt Bridge, and ono on thft east side of the river. . Tho headmaster of the District Higli School applied for use of tho Recreation Ground on December 19 (a Wednesday) for school sports. Ilio request was granted. , Mr. E. Noilson complained of boys from Taita and Nai Nai "scorching along the cycle track to the danger of other people thereon. He stated that he had been run into by a cyclist and thrown violently to the ground. Hie council dccided_ to hand the matter over to the police. Mr. John Gardinor thanked tho council for appointing him engineer, and asked that he should be given his annual holidays bofore he commenced ins now duties." The application was grant-
Tbo engineer, Mr. W. J. Roche, reported that the cost of clearing creeks during tho Inst fortnight had been £10 2s. lOd. Strand's Dedication.—tins work had been completed. The work had been carried out as agreed upon with the Strands and to their satisfaction. Gullies at Brunswick and Downer Streets.- —Tlieso gullies hud been moved off tho line of footpath; It was found that they could not bo moved bodily as others had been, an they wore built partly under tho kerb, so now sumps wore constructed, and the old ones covered with slabs and metal filled in over tlicm. Gas Main, Knight's Road. —The gas mi > ,n ln Knight's Road was being extended, as provided for in the estimates, and the lamp would bo eroded at the end of Bunny Street, as instructed. , Lamps were being fixed in Phara/.yn and Marsdon Streets. Melling Bridge.—Of the suspension rods 29 had been taken out and replaced with new ones, and there were two in tho yard ready to go up. The handrails on the approaches at both ends had had now bolts m arid tightened up generally. Some of tho worst of the cross rods in the handrail on the bridge had been taken out and replaced with new. Thero were about 20 others that wanted doing now, as they wore badly eaten away where they enter the wood ou the lower side, rheii thero were about 100 more that should bo renewed at no distant date, though they were not quite so urgent. Tlieie were 300 of these cross rods altogether. So mo of the short suspension rods also required attention, but they wero not so urgent as those that had been done. Ho recommended that a sum of about £40 be put on next year's estimates and this work proceeded with. Water, Gas, and Sewer Connections.— One connection had been made with tho gas mains, making tho total to date 611, also one connection with tho sewers, making tho total to date 953; and two connections with the water mains, making the total to date 1059.
