THE COOK ISLANDS
The Minister in charge of the_ Cooli Islands stated yesterday that owing to the shortage of shipping and the lack of steamer communication with tha Group, there is a considerable quantity of copra stored . at the Islands awaiting dispatch to New Zealand and the United Statoc. Reports recently received from tha Cook Isltnds by the Minister tell of excellent work being dono tliero at thd Government Experimental Farm; which has now grown to forty acres in area. All kinds of tropical fruits suitablo to the climate of the Group are being grown on tho farm, and already very good results have heen obtained. One of tho products to which attention has been specially directed is the tomato. Experiments have been mado with some twenty-eight varieties, with a view of ascertaining which aro most suitablo to the soil and climate. These experimental operations were commenced three years ago. Classes of native pupils are instructed on tho farm, and it is hoped that their teaching will help them when they begin to undertake systematic cultivation of their own lands later.
