INCESSANT FIGHTING FOR BOURLON WOOD

NEW BLOW BY THE FRENCH

ITALIAN OUTLOOK IMPROVED

REPORTED RUSSIAN OFFER'

OF ARMISTICE

To-day's dispatches from the West tell of a fierce struggle for the possession of Bourlon Wood, a position of importance on the Cambrai front, as 'opening the way for tho exploitation of tho advantages already gained. Tho position has been most stubWnly contested, but is ijow definitely ours. Sir Douglas Haig, in an order of the day, reviews the battle, and congratulates the Third Army on its achievements. The French have opened a new attack on a front of over two miles, and already 800 prisoners have been counted. The situation on the Italian-front is much improved. A frightful struggle is still in progress for the disputed right-of-way from tho mountains to the plains, but in spite of twelve days of hard fighting and enormous losses, the Germans have been unable to mako headway. But there is no slackening of the press ure, and the dispatches so far have not yet removed tne outlook from danger. The Russian Bolsheviki, fanatically pursuing tlus«. queer idea of tho proletariat millennium, have offered an armistice to the enemy. The Bolsheviki, however, are not recognised as the ruling authority in Russia by anyone but themselves; and Kaledin is marching towards the citadels of their brief authority.
