FIERCE ALL-DAY FIGHTING,
■ „. , London, November 23. An Italian official report states: "We repulsed, with 6evero losses, a strong attempt at an encircling attack against Meletta, on the Asiago Plateau. The attack was preceded by a big bombardmeut with tear shells. We firmly held all our positions. Tho enemy renewed his attacks yesterday between the Brenta and tho Piave Rivers. An Italian semi-official report, describing the enemy's attempts to break through between the Brenta and tho Pi aV e on November 21 and 22, says: "Most of the enemy's masses on Thursday exerted their pressure on Tomba and Monfenera, six Austro-German regi mcn ts attempting to encirclo our right wing and dis odge us from the right l, an k of tho Piave. The struggle hero was most violent until nightfall, and continuod with varying fortune by attacks and counter-attacks. The enemy's losses were severe. Mr. Percival Gibbon, writing from Italy, states: "The enemy is concentrating upon an effort to capture Tomba, advance across the l'iave between the villages of Fener ond Wider, then blast a road to the heart of the plain of Venice. The cnomy's artillery consists of large numbers of 6-inch guns, mounted on motor lorries. The pressure in this sector never relaxes. Great crucial battles are developing in tlio triangle between Cornelia, Tomba, and the Piavo Diver. The fighting on the Lower Piavo has crystallised into a defenco lino with the Venetian lagoons boyond. The country hero is below sea level and flooded. Naval guns on ra ft s occupy the lagoons. One hit tbo Austrian bridge at Grisloera at 16,000 yard,, rango, and when the bridge was rebuilt a monitor smashed it with a 12-iuch shell." — Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
