A GERMAN OFFICIAL STATEMENT

(Rec. November 23, 8.50 p.m.)

London, Novemher 22. . A German official statement, explaining the extension of the barred zones round England and France, j.nd the establishment of a barred zone pt the Azores, says: "Our enemies are securing the services of noutral tonnage by all kinds of pressure, including the tightening of the starvation blockade against neutrals. We are therefore oompellcd to extend our submarine operations against England's unscrupulous tyranny, which ignores all ri'chts, especially those of the smaller nationfl. Our widening of the zones will chiefly affect that encircling England, and aims a blow at traffic which is becoming increasingly important to England. The Azores are important as an economic and military base on the Atlantic route. Moreover, ths Mediterranean Channel to Greece henceforth will be closed, inasmuch as the Venizfilist Government uses it less for supplying people with food than for coiiveyine weapons and amnmaition." — Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.-Reuter.
