Dr. Aeneas O'Sullivan has been appointed acting health officer. for the Otago and Southland districts. Dr. O'Sullivan, a graduate of the University of Otago, was one .of'the. students who proceeded on active service at tho beginning of tho war and were'recalled to New Zealand in order that thev might complete their studies. ■ • Lieutenant Gilbert L. King (died of wounds) was educated at tho Wanga- < nui Collegiate School. He. resided in Auckland for some years, and at one time he was a prominent member of the St. George's Bay Eowing Club. Ho formerly was on tlie Auckland staff of the Union Bank of Australia, and subsequently he was farming.at Matakohe. Ho leaves a widow, and two sons.

'Sapper J. 'L OHornblow, who was', awarded the Military Medal:-in"Franco' recently, is the youngest, son-of-Mr-. C.' W. Hornblow, of Eltham,-. Taranaki; ■ and a nephew of Mr. A. R. Hornblow. of Wellington South. Ho was one of the first to enlist, and left with the Auckland Main Body. He went through the Gallipoli campaign, saw service in Egypt, and has been'- in France ■ for some time. His eldest brother is aleo in France, and the second brother returned wounded recently.-

Cabled advice has been received stating that Sergeant J. R-. Fraser, of the N.Z.E.F., has been granted a commission in the Royal Field Artillery. Sergeant Fraser proceeded to Englaud from France last April to receive his training. He left Now Zealand with tho Sixth Reinforcements.: He was one of the 30 Now Zealanders ebosen to stay behind at tho evacuation of Gallipoli while the others got away, and left Suvla on the laat transport to. leave the bay. Bo arrived in France early in April, 1916, and was then promoted sergeant. At the Battle of the Sommo ho won the Military Medal for bfavery in the field. ' ■■ ■

On Wednesday tho members of the Avapuni Orchestra met together and presented their conductor, Corporal Fleming, wffh a silver-mounted baton. Major Gabites, the Camp Commandant, made the presentation, and.in a short speech referred to Corporal Fleming s many good qualities. ,

The principals and staff of Messrs. C. nnd A. Odlin, Wellington, presented Private Trevor Lazurus, of the Thirtythird Reinforcements, with a wristlet watch. Private Lazurus has just rn-. turned from final leave, and was a. member of the staff of Messrs. C. aim A. Odlin for some three years. •

Word has just been received that Private J. W. Newberry, who, when ho enlisted, was on the staff of Messrs. Laery and Co.. Ltd., has been awarded tho Militarv Medal. Out of fourteen membevs of the staff of this company four havo gained honours, Messrs. Steadman and Blinkinson receiving Military Medals, and Mr. D. Pulsford a Croix de Guerre.

Mr. J. C. Jones.- .a well-known resident of Christcluirch. died on Thursday, morning, in his 83rd year; Ihe lato Mr. Jones arrived in New Zealand, .via Australia, in 18S6, mid took up his residenco in .Christcluirch. Ho belonged to one of the oldest families in Wales, his only surviving brother 'being Sir." Pryce . PryccJones, who was knighted at the late Queen's Jubilee. Mr..Jones was a native of Newtwoin.wherq he was born in..] 835. He was associated witli his brother- in business for some, time, but retired to take up other pursuits.
