SOCIAL AND PERSONAL A Dutch Tulip Carden. j Arrangements in connection with "Rose Day," which is being organised for the benefit of tho New Zealand Nurses' Memorial Fund, aro proceeding apace, and the event promises to bo of a most interesting and decorative nature. One of tho special features in connection with the day will bo tho "tulip garden." for which great preparations aro being made. During the past fortnight a band of workers jiave gathered at tho residence of Mrs. A. Preirce, and havo bent all their energies upon the making of artificial tulips. Up to tho present tlioy have made about two thousand, nnd they intend to make at least ono thousand moro. The flowers alone aro well worth purchasing, so natural in appearance and so well mado they, and tho beds when they are laid out in the, Town Hall, should be si blaze of all the vivid colours with which tulips delight tho oyo. Theso beds will bo modelled on tho lines of Dutch tulip gardens, bordered with fences, one section for chillilrai, and tho others for grown-ups. By payment of a small fee tho ]«ircliaser will, if lucky, unearth a pri/.e, mid as the beds have been divided into a children's and adult sections, the prizes will bo arranged accordingly to suit either ono or the other. The ladies in chargo will wear Dutch costume, and in the centre of tho garden will be ii littlo summer-house, in keeping with the- scene, in which supplies will bo kept. Tin , , remainder of tho space in tliu hall will lie for the display oi roses, so Hint altogether the big _ chamber should present n very charming sight indeed. In addition to tlio flowers, afternoon ten, icos, etc., should do much to swell tho proceeds for the fund, which is ono that deserves nil possiblo support.

At the Wungauui show, a prizo was awarded for tho best 3D Ked Cross articles, and among a largo number of competitors Otaki took first place. Mr. Culford Bell has consented to produce a three-act comedy, "Oh, Susannah," in which his company, "Tho Thesbians," will tako part, lor tho benefit of tho "Clam Rogers Comfort Fund." The money which it is hoped .will result from this and similar entertainment? is to provide comforts for soldiers at the Y.M.C.A. Hut, Oatlands Park, half a mile from Walton-on-Thamcs Hospital. A similar fund was opened last year under the name of the "Codford Convalescent Camp Fund," for which £225 was raised, and letters are still being received by tho Wellington secretary showing how greatly this work was appreciated by convalescent soldiers at Home.

Tlie wedding took place in St. Andrew's Church, I'aoroa, last week of Sergeant-Major Smith, of the Defence Staff, and Miss Gladys Beryl Adlam, eldest daughter of Captain and Mrs. Adlam, of Paoroa. Tho Rev. G. Lochore, of Waihi, performed the ceremony. Miss Mavis Adlam, Miss Bcagloy, and Miss Lorna Shaw were bridesmaids, and Servant-Major C. An attractive programme is licing arranged by "the Cheeroh Girls," assisted by some friends. The promoters rely on the support of members of the club and their friends to ensure the raising of a substantial sum for this good cause. Miss Caldow and party entertained the soldiers at the Tauhernnikau Camp on Wednesday night, and last night visited the Featherston Camp.

The Tennis Stall for Sports Day, A meeting of the ladies of the Kelburn Tennis Qlnb was held yesterday evening at tho residence of Mr. G. V. Wilson, Glen Road, to make preliminary arrangements for tho tennis stall (in connection with Sports Day, in aid of the Christmas Gifts Fund for our soldiers), which will have its stand in Mercer Streofc next Friday. _ Mr. Wilson occupied the chair. Various contributions for tho stall wore offered in tho room, and a number of very handsome articles donated for raffles and as prizes for surprise packets. It was decided to sell cakes, sweets, flowers, produce, and anythinu that may be contributed for tho stall. The other tennis clubs will bo associated with the effort, and tennis players and all interested in the object for which the day is bciim organised, aro afiljed to help in any way thoy can by sending in contributions, and not to wait until thev are personally approached. Tho first of tho social afternoons inaugurated for tho mothers of fightinc men by the Women's National Reserve in Stratford was held on Tuesday afternoon. The pigijident (Mre. M'Millnn) received tho nueets, who numbered about sixty, and the Mayor (Mr. J. W. M'Millan) mado a speech. Afternoon tea was handed around by the committee of ladies in charge of the arrangements. Musical items were given and a pleasant afternoon was spent.

Visitors to Inglewood every Saturday, wet or fiiio, have boon met at the railway tation by a little girl, Miss Nilii Lovell, selling button-holes for patriotic purposes. Quietly and unassumingly sho has carried out her self-im-posed task, almost since the outbreak of the war, and as a result has added £84 to tho patriotic funds. On Monday evening tho Mayor of Inalewood (jir. 0. Young), ou behalf of the business people, publicly presented Mrs, J. Lovell with a hand-bap; and sum of money for her daughter, whose uood work they recognised and appreciated.

In spite of tho continued calls that aro being made upon their financial resources tho people of the Wairarapn, in vesponso to the "Our Day" appeal, contributed tho sum of £2825 &. Id., increasing the amount raised last year by £1252 13s. 6d.
