COLONEL HUGHES TO BE A CANDIDATE. Colonel J. G. Hughes announced de-> finitely yesterday that lie would be a. candidate for Iho seat of ' Wellington North in tlio probable went of a vacancy occurring shortly by the retirement of tho Hon. A. L. Herdinan. It is understood that ho intends to stand as an Independent candidate. At an executive meeting of the Wellington Labour Representation Committee, held last night, it was resolved to call a special meeting of the Labour Representation Committee to consider tho probablo vacancy in tho Wellington North electorate. (To the Editor.) Sir—Referring to a statement ap-' pea ring in this morning's Dominion that tho candidature oC Colonel Hughes for Wellington North seat on tho retirement of Mr. Herdinan will receive the support of the Now Zealand Catholic Federation, I have to state that no request has been made on behalf of Colonel Hughes for the support of our federation, and certainly no assistance has been promised.
