TRUANCY AND WAR

CALL FOR BOY LABOUR.

The attendance officer of the Wellington Education Board reported to yesterday's meeting as follows:— "I find difficulty /m dealing with irregular attendance,in tlie country districts owing to the shortage of farm labour, as the result of so many men men having been called to the colours. I have numerous requests for lwys to be allowed to remain from school to assist on the farms, and these cases are difficult to deal with. I am making it a practice to deal with every caso on its merits, and in all cases I am making the very fullest investigations. I am convinced, however, that tj e trouble will become more acute early next year. Another difficulty brought abontTythewar is with the fam£e> of soldiers who settle near the military camps at Trentham and Featherston. [n many cases the home has been broken up and the families como to re--side near the camp, and the fact that the wive 3 are unsettled m their future movements causes them to neglect sendin" their children to school. I have, However, personally visited a number of the parents and impressed upon them the necessity of sending their children to school. The fact that the husband is a soldier makes tho cases rather difficult to deal with."
