A Press Assooißtion messago -from London states that Captain Kelleway, the cricketer, has been awarded tho Mililarj Cross. Surgeon-General Henderson, C.8., Director-General of Medical Services, and Lieutenant-Colonel J. L. Sloeman, 1.5.5., Director of Military Training, will leavo for Dunedin to-night for the purpose of examining members of the Officers' Training Corps (Medical), Otago University, for "A" and "B" certificates. Mr. R. J. IlallamoM, manager, at Gisborno for the New Zealand Shipping Company, has accepted the management of tho oowpany's business in' Southland, which embraces the central office at In. vorcargill and the port offices at the Bluff. Mr. W. Becchwu, accountant of the firm at Napier, goes to Gisborne as acting, manager. Lauco-Corporal W. J. Collins, who has been awarded the Military Medal, is tlie son of Mr. W. J. Collins-, un.til recontly postmaster at Tnhunn, Piako. LanceCorporal Collins enlisted at Morrinsville on his nineteenth birthday, and left New Zealand ae a member of tho Rifle Brigado two years'ago. A Press Association oablegram from London states that Gunner C. Harvey, a Now Zealander, has been awarded the Military Medal. The recent changes in the Government establishments at Peking affected the Chinese Consular arrangements for a time. When Mr. Kwoi Chih left New Zealand in November last on leavo of absence, Mr. Yue H. Jackson, the secretary of the Consulate, was fl'aced in temporary charge. Mr. Kwei was later on appointed to the Philippine Islands, and as a temporary expedient Mr. Yuo H. Jackson was given tie rank of a supernumerary Consul. Information has now been received that Mr. Lin Hsi-Yucn, recently Chinese Consul at Vnnconver, has been transferred to New Zealand, and his arrival may be expected ehortly. A Press Association message recoived from' Brisbane last evening states that Mr. Justico Stringer, of the New Zealand Arbitration Court, will arbitrate on the railwaymen's claims in connection with the recet strike.—Press Association. The death occurred last week at Wellington, after an illness extending over several weeks, of Mr. Matthew West, of Molesworth Street. Tho late Mr. West was born at Twickenham, England; in 1843, arriving here in 1874 in tho ship Warwick. He was married in 1870 at St. Paul's Pro-Cathedral, Jtnlßravo Street, to Catherine, eldest daughter of Alexander Gray, of Strathpeffer, Rossshire, Scotland. For over 40 years he wns in the Government service, being superannuated some three years ago. Ho leaves a wife and grown-up family of four sons-Captain M. A. West, of the South African Infantry; Sergeant R. E. West: Major F. L. G. West and Lieutenant Benjamin Weet, of the New Zealand Exneditionnry Force, and two daughters —Nurso A. M. West, of the etaff of tho New Zealand Hospital, Walton-on-Thames, and Miss-E. F. West, of Wellington. )V Mr. James Ames, City Valuer, who hae comnleted his lubilee of service with tho Wellington City Corporation, is to receive a presentation from the connoil staff this afternoon. The presentation will bo made by the Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luko).
Private advice has been received (hat Temp.-Cnptain D. M'F. Rae, a wellknown Southland- athlote-tcttcher-soldier, is shortly to return home from active service. Formerly on the etaff of the Invercargill South School, Contain Rao who is a B.A. of the Otago University, left with the Tenth Reinforcements as a lieutenant. Hβ was mentioned in dispatches for.his gnllantry in the Battle of the Sommo.
Mr. J. A. B. Howe, nf Brougham Street, has been advised that Second Lieutenant John Carswell (wounded on tho Western front last month) is getting on well. Lieutenant Cnrswell was. when ho enlisted, president of the Wellington branch, of tho Marine Engineers' Institute, and second engineer of tno Wellington city drainage works.
Mr. Arthur Hobday, aged G4, proprietor of the Crown Cyclo Works, Christchurch, died en Sunday, just after gettin" out of a salt wnter bath at Brighton. Private Ken. Ray has been awarded the Military Medal for gallantry in tho field. Private Ray, an old Feildinc High School boy, was in the Bank of New Zenland in Fcilding some years ago, and enlisted in Auckland. Mr. N. Harding, of New Plymouth, has boon appointed Town Clerk of Patea. Mr. Harding has beon on the staff of tho Town Clerk at New Plymouth for several years. Ho was at Gallipoli with tho Main Body, and later was invalided home.
Mr. J. M'Kenzie Henry, general manager and secretary of the Auistralasian Temperance and General Mutual Life Assurance Society, Ltd., died suddenly at Melbourne on Saturday last. As a mark of respect the local branches of the society olosed at noon yesterday.
