Corporal Henry W. Michael, who has been Awarded the Miliary Medal, is a partner in the firm of H. M, and Co., merchants, of Navua, Fill. A native of Fiji, he was educated in Auckland, and returned to the Islands for business purposes. At Fiji he was recognised as a crack riflo shot, and won several medals and trophies. Two years ngo lio left for England, and joined an Imperial regiment. When last heard of he ranked as a corporal in charge of scouts, snipers, and observers. In one ot tho advances io the eastward of lpres, about a month aeo, Corporal Michael was wounded and invalided to England. Mrs. Michael and her two children aro living in Auckland.
A device is used in a stable in Los Angeles (U.S.A.), composed of ordinary stalls, provided with mangers and racJts; the end of tho stall by the horses' heads is closed by a door so mounted that it opens by its own weight as soon as tiie bolts are withdrawn. The bolts are controlled by a wire running along tiie wall of till* stable and easily fusible plugs are placed at equal distances apart. If fire occurs • anywhere, the plugs melt, the bolts are drawn, and the door at each stall automatically opens. At tlifl samo time a door closes at the entranco to the stall, preventing the a inal going into the stable. ,' u ,? f ' the mangers fall automatically, tI IUS fre ,°- in? the halter; the noise caused by the opening and closing of the doors and the fall of the mangers is sufficient to frighten tho horses which, at has been shown by experiment, the outlet that opens m front of them.
