WELLINGTON NORTH SEAT
COLONEL HUGHES 'ASKED TO STAND. It has been reported for somo little time that the Hon. A. L. Hcrdman is. shortly to retire from activo participation in politics in order to tako a seat on the Supreme Court Bench, to be rendered vacant by the retirement of Sir John Denniston. Tho reports have, aroused some interest in the question oi who is to be member for Wellington North after Sir. Herdman retires. Lieut.Colonel J. Gethin Hughes, C.M.G., D-5.0., is stated to be a possiblo candidate, though Colonel Hughes has not yetmadt up his mind on the matter. When the National Government was formed it was arranged that no by-elec-tion should bo contested on party lines, that tho head of tho party to which the retiring member belonged should have tho ri"ht to nominate the candidate wnG should havo the support of the Government. .If this oact is to bo observed in regard 'to Wellington North ibe choice, of a candidate rests with Jlr. Massey.
