SOUTHERN MARKETS
By Telcirranli—Press Association. Christchurch, November 1G The latest reports on the grain crops of Canterbury indicate that they are looking remarkably well on the whole. There nro complaints of Wight in some of the wheat in the Ashburton district, which is an unusual thing. Bust is said to have attacked some of the oat crops. This is due to the.heavy growth and to occasional humid weather. The crops are in many cases well forward and harvesting is likely to begin earlier than usual.- On tlio other hand, the wheat crops are not so forward as last year, and therefore there is less danger of damage by a frost this month if a late one wore to occur in November, ns was tho case in tho tiro previous seasons. There is little .business of any kind doing in tho grain and produco market. The demand for chaff from tho North Island appears to bo easing off, as sales nre more difficult to effect. There is, however, no change in prices. Oatmeai has advanced .£1 per ton, and is now quoted at' 522, in 251b. bags, and the potato market is now showing signs ot ending for the season. There is not much inquiry, and the top price is now £2 ss. at country stations. There is a boat now on tho berth for Auckland, and another is expected to load next week, which will relievo the late difficulty regarding shipping space for tho northern market.
