"ROSE DAY"

FOR NEW ZEALAND NURSES' MEMORIAL FUND. On Friday, December 7, there will bo opened in the Town Hall a sumptuous rose fete, tho proceeds of which are to bo devoted to the New Zealand Nurses' Memorial Fund. Tho Wellington Roso and Carnation Club, which has. abandoned its annual show this year, is devoting all its enorgies to make "Roso Day" a pronounced success, Every garden in the Wellington district will yield its choicest blooms for the occasion, and patriotic gardenors in'other districts are also offering to assist, so that a veritable feast of roses and other flowers may ba anticipated. One of our leading nurserymen, promises to display a largo stand of named roses, including all tho now varieties, so that tho amateur gardener who desires to select rose plants for the coming season may not be disappointed. A Bpecial feature will be a delightful innovation in the form of a "tulip garden " A largo plot in the centre 'of tho hall is to bo planted out with hundreds of gaily coloured tulips, at tho root of each of which -will bo a prize. By the payment of a small fee the purchaser may select his tulip, and if lucky may unearth a treasure. Tho garden is to be presided over by ladies in Dutch costumes, and tlfo blooms of one bed are solely for the cMdron. Produco stalls, afternoon tea, and ico cream kiosks are to bo undertaken by capable hands. The main object of tho fund, which it is hoped will bo considerably swelled by the effort of our rosarians and other workers, is tho relief of trained nurses in distress, occasioned by sickness, old age, acoidont, or other misfortune. The wliolo of the money raised is to bo invested in tho War Loan, and the interest, therefrom will be available for the relief of necessitous cases from time to time as they arise, and already JE2500 has ton collected in New Zealand and invested in tho War Loan. But it is hoped that a 6iim of at least .£IO,OOO will be reached. Full particulars of the' movement have already been published throughout the Dominion. Her Excellency the Cbnntess of Liverpool is patroness of the fund. Tho S resident is Dr. H. Lindo Ferguson, of unedin, and the Wellington vice-presi-dent, Dr._ William Young. Surely no more fitting memorial to the patriotic and self-sacrificing spirit of our nuTscs could be established than tho creation of such a fund.
