STAND TELEPHONES
SOME COMMITTEE RECOMMENDATIONS. At the meeting of the City Counoil last evening tho following report of tho By-Laws Committee was adopted:— "That they appointed a sub-committeo consisting of Councillors Barber, Bennett, and Norwood to inquire into matters concerning. telephones on publio vehicle stands and motor traffio generally. The following recommendations of the sub-committee are endorsed by tho committee and! submitted to the council for adoption:— "1. (a) That tho springs on doors' bo strengthened, (b) That tho snibs ' be taken off the locks on all telephone cabinets. "2. That the corporation inspectors bo instructed to inspect these telephones and cabinets once every fortnight to see that the telephones and cabinets are in order, and report fortnightly to the committee on the condition of the stands and the conduct of drivers generally. "8. That no action be taken in regard to tho suggestion to alter the telephone instruments so as to prevent the sending
of outward, messages until the above systoin has had a fair trial. "i. That a telephone cabinet be erected at tho Johnston Street cab stand, adjoining the Midland Hotel. "5. That the deputation of carriers who asked that a separate pattern lock bo plated on eaoh express stand telephone cabinet, and that each licenso holder be allotted one particular stand which ha desires to work from, and that the names of the drivers entitled to .use eaoh stand and telephone be posted up on the telephone box, bo informed that it is regretted that the requests cannot bo acceded to, as the council have no power to restrict individuals to any partioular Btand*"
