'L'he first town to bo lighted by electricity in this country was Heofton. Tho (Into ivas 1887. It is believed that it was tho first town south of the equator to bo lit by electricity. Tho longest tunnel in New Zealand is t.he Lyttelton tunnel, which is considerably longer.than that at Deborah Bay. The longest tunnel over attempted in this country is tho Arthur's Pass tunnel, but it has not 'yet been cut through.
