The Terraces' Street Sale.
For f'e benefit of their day at the Wellington lied. Cross Shop tho ladies of the terraces hoid a street sale yesterday of surprise envelopes, balloons, and lied Cross thimbles. Fortunately, tho. weather was all that could have been wished for, and as sunshine and calm weather liave an undoubted psychological effect upon the opon-handedness or otherwise of the public, quite apart from the worthiness of the cause, tlie ladies who. were working so whole-heartedly had good reasons to bo satisfied with their effort. _ For the past two or three days the prizes in connection with tlie surprise envelopes were oil view in one of the Singer Sewing llachino Company's windows, and it was evident that ttey found favour in the eyes of tho public, as the envelopes sold rapidly, as indeed did the balloons and the thimbles. In charge of the envelopes were Mrs. Knox Gilmer and Mrs. Andrew Hamilton; Mrs. J. Findlay had the balloons, and Mrs. Metz the thimbles, the two last-named ladies having stands in she town for their attractions.. Tho Terraces' Committee, which is a large and energetic one, with Mrs. Adams as their head, assisted with the selling of the envelopes, the balloons, and the thimbles, and members also worked at tho di'pot in Messrs. Bethuno's auction room, where prizes for the surprise envelopes vero handed out. These ladies comprised tho following, in addition to those already mentionedMesdames M acarthy-I\'.eid, Von Haast, Ward, Robertson, Muir, Proud, Corrigan, Mitford, Edmondson, Bethune, Ahearn, Sievwright, Waters, Salek, A. W. Yonns, Wobb, Jeffrey, Oilier, Napier M'Lean, W. Young, Rennie, Kendall, Miss 'Richardson, and Miss M'Ginnity. Miss Pearson sold threepenny dips in bran-tubs in Bouloott Street, anjl did very well, too. Tho prizes in connection with the surprise envelopes may bo obtained up to one o'clock to-day at Messrs. Bethune's auction mart. The committee wishes (o thank Messrs. Ledger, Edmonds and J. Hamilton for taking charge of the money as it came in, Messrs. Bethune for tho use of a room, the Singer Sowing Jlachine Company for tho use of its win-, dow, and Messrs. Magnus and Sanderson for the loan of a car. As tho result of their labour a little over ,£2OO has "bt-cn realised. Yet another attraction in connection with the Terraces' Day at ilie Red Cross Shot) is tho trousseau which is being exhibited in Miss Abraham's window, in which is included the daintI iest of garments of crepe de chine, China silk, lawn, and linen, and other very charming accessories as well. Sailors' Friend Society. Before an enthusiastic audience on Thursday evening, Mrs. J. Mooro gave a concert crowded with popular items, nil of which wore encored. An item that gave a great deal of pleasure was tho electrically lighted club-swinging of Miss Crane. Choruses filled a bip space in the programme. The competition (short siories) was particularly successful, aided by the gifts of donors at a distance. Mr. Moore, mi&sioner, plejwled for discarded books for the long voyages. Tho performers were the Mesdames Good and walker, and the Misses Mackay, E. Still, Waterliousc, D. Black, and R. Crane, and Messrs. B. O'Connor, Manning, and Fisher, and Lieutenant C. P. Crane. The vote of thanks was very warm. This evening a dance, organised by the Customs and Marine Departments in aid , of comforts for Departmental officors on active service, will be held in the Alexandra Hall, Abel Smith Street. A grand revival performance of that successful pantomime play, "The Magic Carpet," will be presented by Miss Gladys Campbell at the Grand Opera Houso on Saturday, November 24. The cast will be practically tho same as last, including Miss Hazel Fuller as the Princess Yvonno; Miss Maliel Gallichan as tho Prince Uiordus; Miss Ellen Miller as the Red Queen; and Miss Margery Lyon as tho Chancellor.
