FARMER FINED .£5500. George Thompson, farmer and merchant. of Lutton Marsh, Loos Sutton, Lincolnshire, appeared at Spalding Police Court recently in answer to iifty-Jku summonses issued against liiiu at the an. stance of the Food Controller for selling potatoes at prices above the permitted maximum. Thompson pleaded guilty to all the charges. Mr. Travers Humphreys, prosecuting for tho Food Controller, said the transactions covered 1320 tons of potatoes. Tho average pricu obtained, on Thompson's own figures, was .£ls per toil, or JB3 10s. above the legal uutximtun. Olher transactions brought his total illegal profits to .£5120. Thompson had rendered himself liable to a fino of .£IOO on each summons, xir a total of ,t'ssofl, which was juet about the money lie had put into his own pocket by these illegal transactions. Tlio Court imposed the maximum penalty of £100 oil each of the fifty-five summonses, making .£5500, togethor with X'2so costs.
