PRISONERS SENTENCED
John Eric Mattsen, who had been remanded on Friday for sentence on a. charge of attempting lo do bodily harm, appeared before His Honour the Chief Justice (Sir Robert Stout) .on Saturday. Mattsen was a well-known resident of Dannevirko. As the result of some domestic trouble lie was driven to contrive a "home-made" bomb, and explode it ou the wiudowsill of the house occupied hy hie wife and another man. No ono was injured, and Mattsen said that ho had no intention of injuring anyone. His Honour had said ou Friday that he realised that .Mattsen had acted" under great provocation. Mr. H.. F. O'Lcary, counsel for the prisoner, said that two business it en were prepared tosacfc.as sureties for (he prisoner's future good behaviour. His Honour said that he did not ronsiller that ihe cose was one for probation, as the offence involved danger to human life. 'Ho would not pass a heavy sentence, however, becnuse the man apparently did not anticipate that the gunpowder would lmve any serious cfTect. Mattsen had previously borno a good character. A sentence of Four months' imprisonment was imposed. •
