CAMPAIGN FOR KING GEORGE'S FUND
'■Guy Fawtes Day was'celebrated. in j Wellington on Saturday, and the chief , event was the. carnival , organised' by the 1 Eastern .Suburbs to raise, money for |iKing George's Fund.' The carnival was. \ a great success'in every'way: it was fa-. TOnred with fine weather, there was a j large cl'Owd, and the financial result i(not yet announced) was stated to bo 'good.
lit 6 a!in, teams of enthusiastic boys, tommanded 1 by men, were let loose upon 'lho district. Armed with collection- . boxes, and accompanied by "guys," they ■made a very, successful' canvass. ' Tho. raid wag well-organised, and the district ihfid previously Men cut.up into blocks, ■with tho idea of preventing people 'from Airing''bothered more- than once. -By •■about S o'clock the canvass was finished. A little later teams Of girls, in the care of'chaperons, were motored to the city., rtfhere they sold flowers and badges till" I o'clock. In the morning there was a. Oiuy. Faw;kes procession, which' started jfrom Courtenay Place and traversed the. .principal streets. Tho procession was jheaded by the Trentham Band, and included decorated lorries ladon .'with children from tho fivq eastern sohool.i, and many and varied""guys.". At• midday the workers wero-entertained' at a lun.cheon in the Kilbirnie Hall. '
In the, afternoon a sports • gathering jWas held on the. Kilbirnie . Recreation jGvound, and it'.wns.a very chjoynble affair. A feature of this portion of (ho rarnival was the effort made to compensate the children for what thev had fore-gone-to help the cause. There were jTAces for all ages of children, and for [others,' and over 1000 prizes-were' distributed.
The girls' championship, race resulted: jGertrudo Austin (Maranui), 1;. Edith 'Johnston (Worser Bay), 2; Doi'otlij* Smith (Maranui), 3. The result of v fhe boys' 'championship was: Charles Jenkins : (Maranui), 1; Allan Townsond (Kilbiriue),' '2; Archie Morris (Maranui), 3: Tngs-of-iwar were arranged, and six teams-from ■'the military camps took'part; .and'. Rave, ja .fine exhibition. During the afternoon ;th<v Dreadnought visited tlio city, :aud jtpok up'collections at several points'. The proceedings at the Recreation Ground l {■were enlivened by music front the Trenjtham Band. Good business was done at Hlie stalls, which were in charge of the (following:—lce creams, Mrs. Boivntree vind assistants (Miramar); tea kiosk. Mes- ' dames Wallace, Stoupe; and Hatchings; [fruit, Mesdames j. ,T. Clark, Matthews, ;R.obinson. Capper, and W. Clark; soft jdrinks, Messrs. F...,T.'Evans, Gambrill, ,oaveil. Carman, and Sando (Maranui); jHataitai stall, Mesdames Bayfield and assistants; hoopla, Mr. F. Hulse. I In the Vening a huge Iwtifire ivas lit!.. ITt made a fine spectacle. ' T)ie Miramar J .Brass Band attended, and rendered.selecHions. A concert was held in Kilbirnie j Hall, and the following Contributed to: |the programme;—Kilbirnie Orchestra, 1 t Messrs.. .V. Evans.
