NOTES AND COMMENTS
fBV GKNCOB.7 THE NEW ZEALAND CUP. Most of tho horses engaged in tho New Zealand Cup havo practically finished their trials, though many of them will bo stretched out over middle distances today.
The top weight, Multifual, will bo ridden by 0. Sinclair. His form at Masterton was poor, and his efforts at Iticearton aro not likely to bo rewarded with success.
Itorkes Drift is a good middle-distance performer, but two irliles may bo beyond him.
Wnub was runner up last year, and such a good stayer must not be overlooked. Jio will bo rid<ien by 0. Emerson.
Jolm Barleycorn (W. Bell) may not be forward enough, hut reports state that his trainer has done a, lot more with hint than was tho case last year, when he ran such good races throughout tho meeting. Client is rightly much thought of. His work lias been of a high order, and he is a thorough stayer. Meuelaus has yet to prove himself over such a trying journey. Sleight-oMland was well in the market early in the piece, but he lias drifted the last week owing to 6ome poor track work. Despite this, his trainer is of tho opinion that the National winner is at his best. Even so, lio will havo inoro to beat than Lady Louisa and Orleans, whom ho defeated at, Otalti. Multiply can hardly bo right, and Hcndra has no public form to recommend, him. A like remark applies to Marsa. Toka has been racing well over middle distances, but there is a doubt about his ability to got two miles. Of the others Paraoa and Midnight Star appear the most likely to acquit themselves well. It will bo remornborcd that two years ago Midnight Star broke down h a<i straight when looking like a winner in tho Cup, won by Tangihou. In the Welcomo Stakes tho Wolowa colt Pontoon and tho Finland colt Fiumarl; may havo most friends. Tho former is on the improve all tho time, and 6ucli n, good beginner cannot bo left out of calculations. Estla'nd may have most friends in the Derby, in which Impediment and fc'ijver Tongue may givo him tho most trouble.
That good horse Chortle is to race in tho Avondale Oup this aftornoon, and will be ridden by 8. Eeid. Tho Multifld gelding has a big weight, but ho is such a good horso on right-handed going that ho will probably bo found playing an Important part at tho finish of to-day's race. . "Grand Stand" reports in tho Wmton Record: "alio Mystification-Stop Daughter colt, Burrangong, recently purchased by "Mr. J. G. Einslio," owner of Staff Officer, arrived at A. D. M'lvor's stables last week. Ho was brought from 11. Goosoman's establishment at Hastings by Jockey L. H. Howitt for his new owner, and has been at work in Hawko's Bay for tho past •seventeen weeks. Thoso who have scon tho colt describo him as handsome and massive, and one that should soon i repay tho ,cost of outlay. Burrangong is by tho samo sire <ia Sleight-of-Hnnd, Tcka, Indigo, Mysteriaroh (brothor to Burrangong), and Step (brothor),' and Mystified (sister). Tho now arrival is engaged ill the Trial Stakes Handicap and Hack events at Winton." Threo horsemen from F. Tilly's stablo will bo riding in tho Now Zealand Cup on Monday. 0. Price will bo Client, 11. M'Oarton on Johnny Walker and CI. /oung on Midnight fitar. Estland was responsible for a useful gallop over a mile and a quarter at Ricoarton on Tuesday morning. Ho was giving a big start to a'batch of Ciui boras, somo of venom ho overhauled beforo the end of tho journey, while hiß performance was equal to anything done by tho Cup candidates. It was a good Derby trial. Eiccarton stables will bo poorly represented in tho two-year-old ovents next week, but visiting owners Bhould provide plenty of competitors to ensuro interesting sport in that department. Public form points to Finmark and Pontoon as a pair of useful colts, and this, view has been confirmed since their arriwl. They hit out nicely on Tuesday, and they will havo plenty of admirers for their races noxt week. Cherry Mart is also a likely sort, but she does not look so forward aB somo of tho others. A salo of blood stock will bo held at nastingß on November 23 by Messrs. noadlcy. Son, and Stewart, Ltd., in conjunction with Messrs. Williams and Ivcttie Tho horses aro tho property of the estate of tho late Hon.. J R. Ormondtho Karamu stahles-andincludoHymestra, who won 2350 sovs. in stake monoy last season, and Gladful, tho winner of tho last Great Northern Hurdles. Last season, the lato Mr. Ormoml's stables earned for him 6130 sovs. in stakc3. Catalogues may bo obtained from the auctioneers.
