"Every penny profit mado.on the beer goes to the soldiers," said a member of the Army Canteen; .Committee recently. . "When glasses-are rapidly .filled there is always a certain amount of froth, and the • barrels yield more than the number, of gallons invoiced.- -This -surplus amounts sometimes to 0110 glass in ten when the 'beer is drairn .through- an engine. Most of the beer supplied at- the canteens is drawn direct from the barrel. In cases it has .been as low as 2i per cont., or one/glass in forty, our inspectors.have made inquiries, and special instructions .have been issued to canteen managers to watch the profits. It means £175,000 a year. These profits are expended for the benefit of the Army. "We have contributed large sums to the Central Regimental 'Institute? Fund. We spend £100 a month on-smokes for (soldiers and sailors, £1100 a month on' newspapers . to British . Expeditionary Forces in France and the Mediterranean. We have spent over £1000 on.ir.nol for winter comforts for-tho troops.
