MAGISTRATE'S COURT
POLICE AMD CIVIL OASES. Mr. L. G. lleid, S.M., presided at the Maeigtratc's Court yesterday, and heard the police cases. George Williams, with several aliases, was charged with being drunk. alßo>with being a rogue and a vagabond, in that he possessed insufficient lawful means of support. It was shown in evidence that tbero were about 20 previous convictions against the acoused, some of them of a serious nature, and that a few days ago lie was convicted and sot free conditionally on his leaving the city within twenty-four hours. He failed to comply with these conditions, and yesterday he was sentenced to six months' imprisonment on the chargo of being a rogue and a vagabond, the Magistrate remarking that ho did not' think it was fair that Buch men as Williams Bhould be foisted on the country districts. Personally ho had never imposed such a condition, and never would. On the charge of being found drunk, Williams was convicted and discharged. For insobriety, two first offenders, who failed to appear, were ordered to forfeit the amount of bail of 20s. in each case. CIVIL CASES. Judgment was given for plaintiff by default in tho following civil cases:—B. 0. Brown and Co., Ltd., v. James Orr, £3 2s. Od., costs 12s. j Commercial Agency, Ltd., and J, Myers and Co., Ltd., v. J. A. Findlay, £16 6s. 6d.. costs £1 10s. 6d.; samo v. A. It, Townsend, £27 Is., costs £2 145.; Commercial Agency. Ltd., aud W. Qalbraith and Co., v. A. M'Neill, £2 19s. 7d.. costs 10s.; Goodwill, Johnson and Co. v. Frederick J. Chambers, £3 165., costs lis.
