fBY GIENCOE.I Acceptances and final payments in connection with the Canterbury Jockey Club's Spring Meeting will close to-night at nine o'clock. .
Among the horses engaged in the Riccarton Welter Handicap are Teka, Bjorneborg, Cleft, King Star, Blackall, and Nottata, who also figure in the New Zealand Cup, to be decided on the same day. Nottata is not likely to race at the meeting, and of the others, Teka is the only one who hae many Cup admirers.
The two-year-old filly, Kilalla, showed symptoms of lameness while at esercise on Monday.
For some time past, says an exchange, Disdainful has been under suspicion of unsoundness, and after galloping on Saturday morning was decidedly aore. Her prospects of contesting the Stewards' Stakes, for which she was one of tho most fancied candidates, do not look any too bright.
Miss de Val, in charge of J. Ayres, and Midnight Star, in charge of T. George, wero shipped sonth last evening. Trainers are finding it difficult to get suitable horsemen to ride horses engaged in the hurdle events at Riccartou.
At Riccarton on Tuesday, the Cup candidates Telia, John Barleycorn, Paraoa, Korke's Drift, and Sleight-of-Hand, from a fairly even etart, broke away from the mile and a quarter post, but they wore well strung out at the end of two furlongs. When tho winning post, was reached thoy were racing In the order named, Toka being half a length in front of John Barleycorn, a similar distance separating Paraoa from Eorke's Drift, with Slcight-of-Hand several lengths hack. The journey occupied Teka 2min. 122-ssec. It was a meritorious performance on the part of Teia, and the manner in which lie finished up hie task gained him many friends for the big- event. SleighUfUand was. allowed to take matters easy over the last part of the journey.
Percy Woodland, the English crosscountry jockey, who is n prisoner in the hands of the Turks, recently wrote to Wβ bro-ther-in-law, Tabor, the Epaom trainer. He said ho was well, but wondered if he would bo able to ride at all again, as he had not seen a horse for six months, oxcent a few ponies in the district mounted by old men in dressing-gowns. Woodland said he was learning all sorts of trades—plain needle-work, boot-mending etc.
The Waikanae yearlings-numbering six-teen-which are to bo oflered for Bale at Chrietchuroh next week, will be shipped south on Friday. Included in the draft arc sevoral English-bred youngsters. "
E. Hatch, who has riding engagements at the Eiccarton Meeting, went south last night.
Kahumangu. who used to carry the colonrs of Mr. D. Buick, M.P., has been, in the position of runner-up in scurry events three times recently.
At Avondale on Saturday, the Cup, one mile and a quarter, and the Stakes, four furlongs, will bo' decided. On Wednesday next the Avondale Guineas will be run.
While on the train ,iourney from Wanganui to Waverley ■ the maiden candidate Marble Great got hart and was unable to start at the Waverley Meeting.
The three-year-old Hymestra and his full eister Torfrida, are to be sold with the remainder of the Karamu racehorses on November 23.
