Major Neville Nowcombo, M.S.C., Camp Adjutant at Featherston, who has been, absent on sick leave for some time past, has returned to duty.

Dr. Arkle, eon of Mr. James Artie, of Street, Dunedin, who has been on active service, is visiting his parents. He was in practice in Western Australia when the war broke out.
Lieutenant W. Ghirnsidc, recently killed in actson in France, was a Boer War veteran, and tvoll known in rifle shooting circles in the Dominion. He was a member of the Karori Defence Eifle Club for several years, and was'the holder of a Trentham record over 300 and GOO yards, scoring 98 out; of a. possible 100 in January, 1914, including fourteen euccessivo "bulls," which still holds good. At the last Dominion Rifle Association meeting ho finished seventeenth, in tho Snal for the King's Prize, and his record in club competitions was also yery fine. The deceasod soldier, who was employed by the Wellington Gas Company before he enlisted, leaves a widow and young sen.
Mr. N. Jacobs, of Thornton Quay, has received advice that hia son. Lieutenant B. J. Jacobs (wounded on the Western front on August 10), has been transferred to the Officers' Convalescent Home at Brighton, and is doing well. Lieutenant Jacobs, before learing with the Fourteenth Reinforcements, was practising his profession at Palmerston North, being a member of the legal firm ot Laughlan and Jacobs. He received hia wounds under peculiar circumstances. During a bombardment ho took refnge in a shell-hole, whence he -was blown out and rendered result of the explosion for him being a broken collarbone and shoulder wounds.
Mr. W. H. Itompsey, -who lately resigned the position of postmaster at Pahinhut, has cpmpletod forty-three years' service in the Post and Telegraph Department. He began as a_ oadot in Wellington, and has held positions at Wairoa (Hawke's Bay), Blenheim, Wellington, Havelock, Dargaville, Auckland, and Paoroa.
Mr. Frank Kitching. brother of Mr. A. H. Kitehing, of Messrs. Bannatyne and Co.'e shipping department, died an Monday morning in Wellington, rather suddenly. Mr. Kitehing was a resident of Nelson, and the nowe of his death will come as a severe shock to his many friends.
To Captain William Howard Johnson, of Wellington, has come the honour of attainment of his majority at the early a?e of 21. Major Johnson, who left with the Fifth Reinforcements as a first lieutenant in the 6,th Howitzer Battery, saw service in GallipoH, and later was transferred to the Western front. He was promoted from acting-captain to captain en the field in Flanders, and, too, vas awarded the Military Cross for assuming command of and handling his battery with courage and determination, keeping his guns in aotion under heavy fire. Major Johnson was -recently reported to bo acting-major and officer in charge of the battery, and the news of hie promotion mil be welcomed by his many friends here. The youngest sou of Captain H. Johnson, ex-harbourmaster at Welli ii"ton, Major Johnson, was, before enlisting, on tho staff of Messrs. Murray, Roberta and Co., of this city.
