PETONE BOROUGH

MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. The ordinary meeting of the Petone Borough Council was held last evening, the Mayor (Mr. J. W. M'Ewan) presided, and there were also present Councillors C. ■P. Brocklebank, W. Cox, W. Churchhouse, J. Fester, S. Newlands, ,T. MUougall, -D. M'Kenzie. and It. H. Jones. '

The Prime Sinister roplied respecting an objection Tiy the council in regard to a provision in the Valuation of Land Act, 11KI8, that the matter would receive careful consideration.

Hie Wellington Woollen Company complained tliat the 12in. main was not snflieient- to supply tho mill with water. The council decided to set up a committee, coasting of the Mayor and Councillors. Poster, Cnurchhouse, Cox and M'Kenzie °ln make inquiries and report to tho council. Thi General Manager of Railways (Mr. E. H. Hiley) informed tlie council that tho question of providing additional shelter at the Petone railway station had received consideration, and the work would l)e carried out when, funds and material were available. A further communication was received from the Railway Department with respect to the time allowed for passengers embarking on trains at Petone. in which it was stated that the time allowed was not considered insufficient. Mr. T. H. Moore, motor bus proprietor, waited on tho council with resoect to the traffic tax of £1 10s. which lie considered rather heavy. Ho explained that his buses used about one and a half miles of tho borough road, which was equivalent to £5 per mile. He desired the council to see if this tm could pot be modified. The council, after some discussion, decided that it could not tamper with the by-laws.

Tho secretary of the.Ngarqnia Croquet Club wrote, complaining that their greens were in a very unsatisfactory condition, and asked that they might be put in order for piny. The engineer explained that the wet nature of the ground prevented the neccssary work being carried out, but that the'greens would receive attention as early as possible. An entrance is also to l>e given to the greens through the • municipal bowling green.
